Many falls. Probably 20 or more. For a multitude of reasons, but I went through a phase when in my 40s where my left hamstring wasn't firing well and I'd drag my left foot close to the ground as my leg would swing forward in preparation for footstrike. I'd catch the foot on small rises in the ground underneath and tumble forward, head first. This led to the vast majority of my falls. I have since adjusted my running technique, strengthened my hamstring, and haven't fallen in the past couple of years.
Two come to mind.
One was a cross country race where everyone had to cross a stream, there was a concrete step the other side. I fell coming out of the stream and cut my leg on the concrete step. I was about 17.
The worst one was when the soccer team was using the pitch in the middle of the track and decided, while we were doing 400m reps, to roll out a fake grassy path over the track to the pitch. I was running with a group of four people and we were doing 400s at about 65 and I was fatigued. When we saw the grassy track everyone tried to jump it for some reason instead of running over it. I was caught by someone else and went flying, as I was in shorts I tore up my knee again with a kind of burn and it took quite a long time to heal. Bizarrely, I got up and finished the rep.
Gotta watch out for that black ice...it just sneaks up on you and robs you of your balance!
Running the opening 880 leg of a distance medley at the indoor Dartmout Invitational in 1976 as a college freshman for UMass, I'm lined up against the Philadelphia Pioneers club, Villanova, Providence College, the NYAC, and I'm nobody.
I gun for the lead going into the first turn, Providence's Mick O'Shea strongarms me to the track. I'm sitting backwards on the track 35 yards into the race wondering what happened.
I got up and hobbled to a 2:08. Mick came by afterward laughing, and said "welcome to my world".
I've fallen on city sidewalks several times. One time, I was in Tulsa running from the hotel before work. Tripped on some broken sidewalk and slammed my palm down hard to the point where icky fat was oozing out. Went to a walk-in clinic to have it looked at.
Another time, I was in Old Town in Alexandria, VA and tripped on some unlevel sidewalk in the dark. Hurt like hell.
The last time, I was going down some little steps after crossing a foot bridge in the downtown area where I live. I think a lot of that was due to my neuropathy. I have been reluctant to run ever since. It gets harder every year in some locations and I detest having to drive somewhere just to take a run.
JUST ONE TIME. I WAS RUNNING WITH A GROUP OF ABOUT TWENTY, AND WE WERE ON A SIDEWALK IN THE MIDWEST. THOSE WHO LIVE IN THE NORTH IUNDERSTAND WHAT TREE ROOTS DO TO SIDEWALKS. NEEDLESS TO SAY, I DIDN'T SEE IT BECAUSE OF THE HERD, AND IT GOT ME GOOD.
4 time in 50 years. . Each time I tried hurdle an object that was on the ground. Each time that said object was no higher than two to three inch tall.
