This interview was given on August 15th 1981. After his best season ever. A fact that would remain true until he retired.
Not sure if people outside the UK will be able to listen to this but -

At around 14:11 he speaks about his training stating that during the winter he spends about 6-7 hours per week in the gym.
He also states immediately after that his mileage during the winter is "normally about 75-80 miles per week."
And the bit I found most interesting, at around the 31:15 mark he states that he will "probably be running the 5000 meters in the 1984 Olympics."
No doubt his injury and illness problems in 1982 & 1983 put an end to that plan as he did not have time to get the necessary endurance work in.
Also likely that moorcroft's 13:00.41 the following year and aouita just coming onto the scene made him reassess where his best chances for gold was.
He did adjust his training in preparation to move up in distance in 1987 I believe it was but ran into injury problems and with the '88 olympics the next year he didn't want to risk stepping up to an unknown distance and risk not running well enough to make the team. Something he would nonetheless fail to do anyways.
Worth a listen if you're able to.
