Imane Merga and Kuma ran 26:57 and 26:52 respectively. Remember, Bekele beat both of them at the PRE classic with a relatively controlled and timed kick. He is not out yet.

The Kennster hasn't even begun to fade.
No longer the favorite? sure.
No longer a threat? That's ridiculous.
No, he just needs to get his PEDs back in alignment....
Really? The other guys finished a long time ago.
I could not have said it better.

Gosh, Bekele didn't run 14:54 like our "medal threats", Lagat and Rupp?
I managed to chat a bit with Dejen after the race yesterday. At least according to him, all three from yesterday (Dejen, Kuma, Merga) are going to Moscow. Lets see if the Ethiopian federation thinks the same.... If that is the case, then we can say KB is done on the track
I think it would be insane not to include Bekele on the team. The man with the most experience out of all the Ethiopians.
He is definitely not the same. And I think if he is not close to the same Bekele of yesteryear by now, he never will be.
But with him, through sheer force of habit he can run 27 flat even while everyone is calling him "done".

like geb huh
bring him back too
it don work like that in africa
I spoke to someone high up in the Ethiopian Athletics federation earlier and i can assure you that Bekele is going. They asked Merga to run yesterday to give him another chance, which he unfortunately hasn't taken. The 10k men's will be as follows.
Jeilan
Gebremeskel
Kuma
Bekele
Though not confirmed until the race in Lausanne, the 5k for men is likely to be as follows
Alamirew
Hagos
Edriss
The selectors and coaches believe that Edriss is unbeatable over the last 200m. Unless Gebremeskel does something phenomenal in Lausanne its unlikely he will be in the 5k team.
in alignment with the planets?
k.bekele is my pick to win both. no one has run anything great yet. he has b.s galore to deal with.
That's a good point.
Even if he's slipped, nobody has really replaced him.

In the event this isnt just pulled out of thin air...very interesting about Gebremeskel in the 5000. He is silver medalist and has closed 55 in a 12:46, and shown the ability for a ferocious kick in a slow race at London.
Perhaps his poor form earlier could be a contributing factor...but I would take Gebremeskel anyday over Alamirew.

Id take alamirew over hagos if alamirew wins their next match up, alamirew had a better kick in a sub 13 race and hagos may have peaked to soon this year.
At 31 he is on the decline, but thanks to his natural supremacy has a long ways to fall before he he ceases to be a medal threat.
With so many runners close to one another, I could see ETH not allowing anyone to double. dG has not had a good 5000 this year. As crazy as it sounds, maybe they do keep him out. That said, I would be surprised that they are that confident in Edriss.

No, Gebremeskel hands down needs to be on the 5k team. I think he's the best 5k runner in the world this year. Better than Farah (12:53), Rupp (12:58) AND Hagos and Alimerew, because he can close faster than them. He closed in 54 in a race where he won in 12:46! If you go back and look at the olympic 5k race again you'll see that Gebremeskel got boxed in. If he wouldn't have it wouldn't be a strech to say he probably would have beat Farah. He just made a 10k debut at 26:51 w/ the rabbit leading for 3k for crying out loud. He's on top of the world. The Ethiopian federation will let him be on both teams and he might be a guy to complete the double. Lets think, Mo Farah ran a slow tactical 3k for indoor season, couldn't run the 1500m at OXY because of sickness, barely held off ritz in the 5k, got beat in a slow tactical 5k at pre (13:06?), and ran a slow and kick 5k in Europe. Galen Rupp ran great indoors with a 3:50 mile, 7:30 3k AR, but so far outdoor he's done a workout 3k in 7:46, Will Leer beat him in the 1500m w/ him at 3:36, he faded at Prefontaine cause he didn't have a kick, his US champs 10k (28:47), and 5k (14:54!). The winner of the pre 5k has goten upsetted, Alamerew faded in the pre 5k, then went on to upset Gebrehewit in the 5k. But Gebremeskel has already beaten Alamerew in the BAA 5k. Farah and Rupp have done nothing to prove they can run fast times and win. Not even sure if a Kenyan has broken 13 yet (all tactical low 13 races for them), and some Ethiopians have but they haven't been able to reach the sub 1250 that most of them produced last year. having this said no one in the world has proven they can challenge Gebremeskel at a FACE PACE! So in order for Gebremeskel to get the double he's going to have to have the pace a little hot. But best of hopes to him in Moscow...
