What could nick symmonds run in a 5k race on the track? Yes I know this is not anywhere near his distance, but just a hypothetical question.

He will not run that fast with his racing tactics. It doesn't work in the 1,500.
How do people like you even survive? How can you muster the intelligence required to open a box of cereal in the morning?
Symmonds' 800 strategy is so obviously the best strategy he could take. He gets way more out of his talent than anyone else on the world stage, at least in part because he runs smart.
As for the 1500, his tactic of running nearer to even splits than most works even BETTER than in the 800.
Please get a clue. Or at any rate, go back to that box of cereal. That ought to keep you occupied and off the boards.
I wish him well, because he's obviously seen the limits of his future at 800m, but I don't think he's got the right body type or training regime to be a world class 1500 runner. IMO.
Symmonds does not always go out in the way back and try to kick past everyone. Actually I think he goes out in a similar pace every time and sometimes that puts him in last and sometimes he is right with the leaders. The only thing he doesn't ever do is take the lead.
A pretty smart strategy I'd say when you think about it.

with his speed 3:29 seems realistic.
Seb Coe ran 1:41.73
~ 3:29.77 PR
Symmonds is a punk just like you. Let me guess he will protest the system if he doesn't run a 3:32 and cry about sponsors. This dbag needs to grow up.
He's a warrior, and I believe what he says.

LOL.

Hey Vento-parody, wheres the insults?
Agreed. A lot of the posters don't realize that you don't need to run huge positive splits in the 1500m to be successful.
Symmonds will do exactly what he needs to and that is run a pace that allows him to run most of the race in a smooth and relaxed way so that he can keep his pace and close well.
Does Matt Centrowitz ever look like he is going balls out in the first 1000m of the race? Not usually, but he runs very tactically savvy and smooth enough to allow him to sustain.

He ran 3:36.0 early season last year. He then lowered his 800m PR to 1:42.95 and did more strength work - not outlandish.
He ran 3:36 in a winning effort at Oxy again this year too. Throw in a couple more months of training, a faster race, and a drop of a little over 2 seconds should be easy for him.

I agree with your post, except for the above. You have no way of knowing this. To say that Symmonds gets more from his talent than Rudeshia is an extreme statement. Yes Rudisha is far more talented than Symmonds, but he also runs to his maximum capabilities almost every race.

Actually, those tactics do work pretty well in the 1,500. That's how Wheating ran 3:30, and how hordes of runners set PRs in the Diamond League. Sit in the pack with the fastest field the world can offer and hang on for the ride, baby. Nick can go 3:33.
100% correct. Nick should run whatever pace he thinks will best suit him to run a fast race if his goal is to run a fast race. If the race goes out in 54, don't follow it and go out in 57. Nick just needs to get to 1200 around 251 and try to bring it home in 41/42. He doesn't need to go out at an insane pace that the leaders themselves shouldn't be running.

I concede.

Except perhaps that it's a different race
So?
He did the same thing in the Millrose 600 earlier this year.

How do you know he gets the most out of his talent? He doesn't run smart. Look at the US Champs! What kind of moron gives Solomon over a second at the bell when he knows Duane can beat him in a fast race? What a genius strategy!
Symmonds didn't even get into the Olympic Final automatically. He got in as a fastest loser getting beat by a 1:44 guy! LOL
Watch the WC in 2011. He was in a perfect position with 250m to go, then LETS HIMSELF GET BOXED IN! LOLOLOLOLOLO

1. Show one international race where he doesn't do this.
2. Well going out in a similar pace every race isn't winning him anything. Why wouldn't he ever try anything different?
3. He is never right with the leaders in international races. His stupid race strategy doesn't allow it.
The guy is one of the dumbest athletes we have in T&F. Luckily for him he's talented.

To be fair, Nick has been talking 1500 for some time.
Yes, the talk has suddenly increased.

You have real issues. I see divorce in your future.

It's winning him the best place possible. There's a reason why so many American 800 runners over the years who went out in 50 flat everything didn't make it and usually got beat.
Lucky for us he's smart.
