I'm a male mid distance runner currently going into my sophomore year at a pretty good D1 school, but we lack good weight and strength training. I lifted a little for the first time ever freshman year, and I'm going to try and lift a lot this summer to get strong. I'm pretty weak and although my mileage was pretty poor, during 1500m races (I'm primarily an 800 runner) my arms got tired of pumping so I feel like I need a strength boost.
My plan is listed below (taken from a friend but I'm not sure he even knows what he's doing). If you have time, I'd greatly appreciate telling me if this plan will make me a little stronger and faster or critique it in ways that can make me stronger and faster along with me increasing my mileage.
This is the second week of my plan so I guess the times and weights will increase a little as time goes on
2 Days a Week- Core ( 1 min Plank, 1 minute Side planks, 1 minute bikes, 20 situps, 20 side situps, 1 minute bike)
2 Days a Week- 3 sets of 10 reps (15 lb in each hand dumbbell press, 20 lb dumbbell tricep extension, 40 lb butterfly)
2 Days a Week- 3 sets of 10 reps each (curls with 15 lb in each hand, reverse curls with 10 lb in each hand, 80 lb pull bar down to chest, 65 lb leg lift)
I was going to add in pushups where you have the dumbbell and bring it up to you with one arm as you come up as well as when you stand up with a dumbbell above each shoulder, squat, lift both dumbbells up and down, and then stand back up again but I'm not sure what day to add them on
If you see any useless exercises or if it makes sense to recombine days that would be of great help! I guess I wanna look good but more important to me is improving my 800 times.
