I have a goal half-marathon in Oct and another about 6 or 7 weeks earlier. I want to run the earlier one (an out and back) as a workout. So, should I...
A. Run the entire thing as a marathon-paced effort, or
B. Run out at a steady pace and back at HM goal pace, or
C. Something else.
Thanks for any help.
I would probably do either A or B. Actually, for A, I would probably do a mile or two easier, and then 10 or so at marathon-paced effort.
B, doing the out at goal pace plus 1-minute, and the back at HM goal pace is a great peak workout, and a BIG workout. I have used a similar workout, but only did 4 out and 4 back. The article I got it from (Ryan Hall's former coach), suggested either 4-4, 5-5, or 6-6, depending on how much you could handle.
The only reason I'd probably pick A over B is because B is meant to be a peak workout. I did the 4-4 run 2 weeks before the race and it worked great. You are 6-7 weeks before, so it's too early for a peak-type workout.
I would also give some consideration to racing the first one rather than using it as a workout. 6-7 weeks is plenty of time to recover. And, if you give yourself enough recovery time, you should have a very nice bump in half-marathon specific fitness.
Good luck.
