I've been running with three other guys for a couple years. We do a once a week long run together and do few races together. Every race we do together, I'm the slowest guy. I come the closest in the 5ks to the other three but I am still far behind. I could never understand it because honestly I'm feel like I'm in better shape.
This weekend on a lark we went to the track. I was even with the fastest one on 400s but I killed them on 200s. I am thinking that maybe these long runs 10 - 12 miles are not the best way for me to train. I race in 5ks through 15ks. (Some of my running buddies are marathoners.)
