This was in HS so take it for what it's worth (I wasn't really training so much as just jogging during summer months).
I had my jaw surgically broken and reset to move an overbite and ran consistently about 2 or 3 weeks later (can't remember specifics) with an incredibly swollen face. Surgery was in the summer and I had swelling well into the XC season. I had my jaw rubber banded shut during the time and really only came out that early as an obligation to the team as a captain - though it wasn't difficult. Went through the early season kinda mediocre and finished as district champion (XC). Was a decent runner before and still improved after surgery.
A lesser surgery (wisdom teeth) had me out for a day or two and never impacted training in a negative way.
Some people respond differently though. My sister was on her [filtered for language] bottom for about two weeks just after the wisdom teeth. I consider myself to be considerably more 'tough' than her, though I do know some 'tough' guys that responded less favorably than myself so it probably has some physiological or otherwise external components to consider.
