You get faster and stronger when your body recovers. My training for the past 2 years has been a very typical 70-110mpw (usually) where I will do 3 weeks "up" and a fourth week "down," with workouts and all that. So for instance 85, 90, 90, then a week at 60-70 with a day off. After Track and XC I usually take a week or two completely off. I'm content with my training, think I train really well, and have seen huge gains over these 2 years.
However, after coming back from a one week break, within another 2 weeks I feel stronger and overall just better than before the week off (this is pretty much at the end of XC season and then about 2 weeks after restarting). I'm wondering if anyone has tried a schedule that incorporates more of these extended rest breaks--ie, instead of taking a down week with only one day off, a down week with 3/4 days in a row completely off, so pretty much a schedule with 3 weeks of solid training, a few days of complete rest, then repeat. Curious to see what results this would bring.
