Obviously he was a phenomenal athlete and this is partly attributed to his training - does anyone know how he ran his 'easy' runs? were they truly easy or more moderately paced, and how would this pace translate to a 4:20 1500m runner

Coe's dad and Frank Horwill used 5 pace training. Here are some links:
These questions are always taken out of context. Cram did that, for example, during the winter. Are you asking about easy runs during base or easy runs during the competition phase? Training is not the same year-round.

road runs at 520 miles are misleading. a 4 minute miler or some such, that is a good workout in itself.
but for a guy that went 141, that is slow running indeed.
those runs were pretty much to refresh the legs and assist recovery, but sure there is a bit of vo2 max benefit and the energy systems are enhanced through a lot of work. when you back off, you have an energy surplus for a while. that's part of the peaking process. that's why you do volume and back off.
peter coe did revolutionize training but he did not quite get it right with seb.
coe should have run el-g times. or 140 for the half.
he did something in between.
For a 3:50 miler or thereabouts,
5:20 pace is considered easy
4:45-5:00 pace is steady-state
LT pace is around 4:30/mile
So this is no different from a 17:00 5K guy doing the bulk of his non-workout mileage at 7:00-7:30 pace
It makes perfect sense to me. Your easy pace per K is equal to your 1500 meter date pace.
No, it's not.
