Leroy seems like a solid parent.
First, Cameron hit the genetics lottery and also the nurture lottery. Reminds a bit of Taylor Phinney the cyclist in that regard.
Second, I like Leroy. Loved that he wrote him a note to apologize. Yes, he could have said something but Cameron will read that note for years to come and remember it.
at 5'8" 155, he shows that the build isn't absolutely key to sprinting talent.
Cameron has a completely different build than his dad did. I guess the closest sprinter I can think of is Calvin Smith who is listed at 5'10", 152 lbs.
Nice article.
Pretty impressive to beat all of your dad's high school PR's when your dad went on to be a world record holder.
Agree with the first two replies: biggest impression I took away from that article is that Leroy seems like a thoughtful guy and great parent and role model. Nice to read.
5'8 155 is a great build for a sprinter.
i'm not sure what you meant by that comment.
most great sprinters have been 5'8-5'10 or so.
tyson gay is like 5'9.5
ato boldon 5'9 160
jon drummon 5'9 160
maurice greene 5'9 165
mike rodgers
those are just a few. it's "rarer" for an elite level sprinter to be over 6'0.Bolt is ridiculous rare
Powell was tall before Bolt, and Lewis before him. There will be more tall elite sprinters.
The second and third fastest 100m runners ever are under 6 feet.
WR holders Calvin Smith, Ben Johnson, Leroy Burrell, Maurice Greene and Tim Montgomery were under 6 feet.
Carl Lewis was tall. Asafa Powell, Bolt.
There seems to be no correlation for height and speed.
Same with distance runners.
Ah, the good ole 90's when someone with as little talent as Burrell could run a WR. You got two choices. Juice up and live up to your dads dream. Or compete clean and always be considered "the son".
Anyway, the dad got real fat. Wow.
Don't forget Francis Obikwelu at 6'5 (9.86, and 19.84).
I think he's pretty lucky to have his dad as a coach, because only god knows how many talented athletes get screwed by bad coaches/decisions so it's nice to have someone to offer guidance.
