Oi, back to this again. The rabbit is in HS.
R U sure about that?

Says he's class of 2014, so yes heis a high school junior.....
That may be one of the worst tracks I have ever seen this century in the US. What the heck is that, unfinished asphalt? Looks like an off ramp on the highway.

Oh, I ran on a few tracks that bad or worse in the Midwest in the 90s, tracks where the 3200m results would be +20-25 secs compared to a Mondo track.
The thing I'm worried about with the rabbit is that he basically has to run his 800m PR in the mile race to get the pace right, so unless they got him because he is incredibly good at even splits, the pace could very well be all over the place

That's why I said this century. I ran on cinder and asphalt in the 70s and 80s, but I haven't seen that type of track in a while, except maybe a middle school with no district funding.
Growing up in Florida, asphalt tracks were the norm in the 80s-early 90s. During the early-mid 90s is when a lot of tracks were changing over to rubberized, which were usually a sprayed down material over the asphalt.
Anyway, I am not totally surprised to see an asphalt track in FL, but I am surprised to see such a crappy looking track at Colonial HS - a school that is in a good area and has quite a history of success at XC and track. Strange.

Defnitely drop any rabbit.
IF the rabbit is a pro, well, that's just ridiculous, make this an all HS event.
If the rabbit is a HSer, how the heck good at rabbiting can he be? Who knows what will happen with an inexperienced pacer.
Just let the racers sort things out on their own.
The pacer has run 9:02 for 3200 and 3:53 for 1500 in the last few weeks. He also just ran 1:58 last Saturday doubling back from the 1500. He's more than capable of 1:57. Whether or not he'll run even splits is a different question, but his teammate is in the race and he's probably hoping for an invite himself for next year, so I am sure he's taking this very seriously and has been working hard all week to make sure he gets it right.

Interesting point, I wonder how the choose the rabbit. Looks like he ran his 800 PR doubling up after a 3:57 1500, and has a 3:53 PR. So, he may not be comfortable, but as long as the nerves dont get to him, he should be fine for getting the job done.

FWIW, Colonial isn't really in a great area. It's definitely not in a bad area, but it doesn't quite match up compared to some of their rival schools in the county (Winter Park, Boone, Edgewater, etc.). I also grew up in the Orlando area (Oviedo), and not THAT far removed from high school (c/o 2004) and I ran almost exclusively on asphalt tracks. There were some exceptions, but more often than not, I was on asphalt...including my high school, where Jenny B also attended.
Although I do agree, Colonial has been a pretty solid team for a while, so I'm not sure why they haven't upgraded the track. But to my knowledge, they haven't ever hosted a track meet (and may not have a desire to do so), so that could be a reason.
Anyway, I'll be rooting for Arroyo to break 4!
I thought Arroyo would break 4, before seeing this video, but now I think he will have a hard time to do it if it all.
It is one thing to aim for a race and give it your best, but something entirely different to think you had it made before starting, and then finding out something entirely different in the race.
Both Arroyo and Montoya now have the FT curse on their shoulders. This opens the doors wide for someone else to take the prize, so I'm changing my picks.
My pick is now Ben Saarel for the win.

There are too many unknowns for me to make a confident prediction, but Ben Saarel is very strong, a great kicker, a great competitor, and tactically, to steal from His Bobness, "never known/To make a foolish move"...
"I'd like to work it out so that it comes down to a pure guts race. If it does I'm the only one who can win it"

true story.
i think what you are all failing to see here is that Ben Saarel has only run 1:54 and 4:08. He clearly lacks the raw speed needed to break 4.
He's actually run 1:52 and the race where we ran 4:07 he closed in 54. So yeah, I'd say he lacks the raw speed.

soloing 1:47 is just so amazing though i can't get over how impressive that was. arroyo is the most talented man in the field. saarel is the most savvy.

You're right. There's no way he can race an 800 off miler training.
I mean, there's no way he could run a 1:47 a week after training for and running an 8k XC race at the World Junior XC championships. That would never ever happen. Oh wait...
It's a long way from 1:47 high to 1:46 low without specific training.
he's run 1:51..
he's also run 1:52 running 59/53.
