So which year did it become inappropriate? I'm keen to know.

Pa and Ma were fixing Sunday supper and we was first bathing the rugrats on the porch and round bout ten injuns came whooping and hollerin over yonder by the crick and Pa grabbed Ma and fired my six shooter right over those murderin' redskins backs. We never seen them again, you betchya!
The name should be the Washington, D.C., "Politically Corrects."

Around 1933? Hey, it was a bad choice.
It sounds like more white people that need to be righteous and P.C. care about changing this name that anyone who has an indian/native heritage.

The team was originally in Boston as the Boston Redskins. Maybe they were named after the fact that Boston Tea Partyers in 177whatever dressed up as Indians when they poured tea in the harbor. I dunno.
Agreed. It is a bunch of PC bullcrap. Nobody seems to care that we have premiere college football teams with stereotypical names like "Fighting Irish" and "Bargaining Jews".

What about the Vikings? I am Icelandic but find no offense to that.
Hey now, wait a minute... if you don't find cartoon vikings with horns on their helmets offensive, you should, or you dishonor the mighty blood of your Nordic forefathers.
Then again you Icelanders were kicked out of the Nordic lands centuries ago and can't be expected to have the same standards.
The first reply in this thread is completely ridiculous as it doesn't even mention the word redskin. Also, for everyone complaining about how D.C. is overly politically correct, maybe you should examine our federal laws which pretty much exclusively refer to Indians as "Indians" or "American Indians."

I've heard of the Fighting irish. Who are the Bargaining Jews?
Easy solution. Draft ONLY Indian/Native American/Native Indian players to the team

Lol, did you think it was like Snapple bottles of tea they "poured" in the harbour?

Why is it so difficult for so many Americans to understand that "Redskins" is an inappropriate team name in 2013?
Why don't you change your name first?
Teams that need to change their names:
Washington Redskins (makes fun of Indians)
Cleveland Browns (makes fun of Hispanics)
Cleveland Indians (even have Chief Wahoo!)
Atlanta Braves (Tomohawk chop makes me cry)
Chicago Blackhawks (COME ON!!!)
Florida State Seminoles (they even have an Indian ride out with a flaming spear!!!!)
New York Giants (makes fun of fat people)
Chicago White Sox (can't make fun of whites, either)
I'm sure there are more, but that would be a good start.
How about "Washington Trail of Tears"?

That Indian was designed by actual Seminoles and is used by the permission of the tribe.
The Minnesota Vikings however were not designed by a real Viking and are an insult to all true Nordic berzerks such as myself.

What about the Oklahoma Sooners?
Do we change all other names that are named for a group of people? Cowboys, Jayhawks, Seminoles, Tar Heels.
I live in n. Florida and there IS a push to get rid of the Seminole mascot!
I say, keep the name and make the mascot sun burnt people... It'd be great for cancer awareness

I must agree with the 2nd poster. I attend a University that has a few indians that go there, and some white or black is always in class talking about how we owe all this political correctness to Indians.
One time I was in class and there was an Indian kid up front (navajo i think) and the kid said he wanted to work at an Indian health clinic, and then some black girl in the back of the room stood up and said "excuse me, dont you mean native american" and went off on a long tirade about how she, a black girl, could somehow tell the Indian what he is or isnt allowed to call himself.
Come on people. Wake up. We dont "owe" minorities a special type of respect.
This. How often do black people bend over backwards to call white people caucasion? We should not bend over backwards for other groups, nor should Indians let other people tell them how to identify themselves.
Very good wording my friend. God bless you and your family. Have a great spring and summer running season.
CLEVELAND INDIANS FOR LIFE!!!!
