I don't know, was Farrell considered a collegiate athlete? Did he set a school record?
The front page story said Estrada's time was the fastest collegiate time since Rono's 13:08. We're talking about a time that would count for a college record, right? Or are we talking about times ran on American soil? McChesney hit his mark in Europe in a non-collegiate meet.
I think Collegiate records must be set during the collegiate season by an athlete competing for a US college.
Thanks for the clarification. I thought Rono's 13:08 was in Europe, but I'm not sure. I think his 13:06 was overseas. I know Rono's steeple WR was in Seattle and I think one WR was in Berkeley, perhaps his 13:08 ... I'll now go to Google.
School records can carry over through the summer, but not collegiate. Thanks.

It said Estrada's 13:15 is the fastest collegiate time since Rono. But Bill McChesney ran 13:14.80 for a school record. Doesn't that count?
I saw that McChesney race. Could have easily gone sub 13 that day - basically jogged a 13:14.
Lawi Lalang and Stephen Sambu indoors.

Rono ran his 13:06 at Cal.
No one can get their facts straight. Rono ran 13:08 at Bezerkley CA while at WSU. He ran 13:06 years later in Norway.

I was in that race (can't remember if I was 2nd or 3rd). I assure you he was not jogging. But he was far ahead and there was no rabbit or other assistance.

Why do people say stuff like this? OK - so you were there and maybe his run looked easy, but that doesn't mean that he was either jogging, or could have 'easily gone sub 13 that day'. You can't possibly know that. You're just randomly speculating.

Thanks for editing the name of the post, I couldn't figure out how to do it. I also posted another thread with a correction.
Billy ran 13:15.77 @ the Northern Division Relays on May 16, 1981. He ran 13:14.80 in Zurich on August 8, 1982.
I have a vague recollection of there being threads discussing differences between what qualifies as a collegiate record and what are school records.
I'm almost sure McChesney's 13:14 was set in Europe. Maybe techically that doesn't qualify as a collegiate record but is a school record?
