Great job by Lipari, I can't believe she got around Roesler. Both teams Villanova and Oregon beat the existing collegiate record set by Tennessee in 2009. Now Roesler will likely be running for Oregon's hot 4 X 400 team in about an hour.
Roesler ran a faster split (2:02.19) than Lipari (2:02.75), but Nova had a faster leg 1, to give them the lead over Oregon. Oregon had another runner (Kesselring) was was under 2:03, but that first leg cost them the race.

However, it's in the second leg that Oregon lost the most ground to Nova.
Sorry, can't pull the "Oregon beat themselves" card when they lost to the team that set the collegiate record. Oregon ran out of their minds and lost to a better team. Congrats to all 8 of those girls and their coaches.
...and Goule from LSU was the fastest of them all at 2:00.39... She put them back in the race on the second leg.
Love the Lip!
Roesler came back strong on the 4x4 with a 52 flat split.
Lipari is a straight up beast! But I didn't know she had THAT much leg turnover....and is a junior so has another year to develop under Gina. Gina is definitely one of the best coaches in the country.
Very impressive 4X4 by Roesler...and the rest of those hot Oregon girls. All four went under 53, with Phyllis Francis burning a 49.9 on the anchor.
In the 4x8, Oregon got the baton close to Villanova with LSU a little back. Lipari did not want to take it fast, and Roesler quickly realized that jogging along just lets LSU with Lipsey back into it. So she took the pace and aggressively pushed it along. I figured that she would pull away from Lipari, but Lipari put on an unbelievable final stretch. Great race to watch.
I stand by my statement that it was the first leg that cost Oregon the race. Their 1st leg was in 2:07.72, while the split on the second leg was 2:04.98.
Margey is a freshman who ran with the Oregon woman and didn't seem at all intimidated. Look at the race and watch at the top of the backstretch on the first lap. Friday seemed about to pull away, but Margey wouldn't have it. Who's to say if Friday had run faster that Margey couldn't have matched it. She is one tough runner.
On the second leg, Picirrillo, another freshman and not an 800m specialist, ran with LeBlanc and buried her. That was the key to the race.
Three of the four Nova women ran PR splits for the race. Akande and Lipari took the best the two Oregon women had and didn't crack.
Today was just Nova's day. They were better today. Both teams ran great races and broke the existing college record. Lipari's effort down the stretch showed unbelievable toughness.
Not being as good as Villanova in that race: What cost Oregon the title.
Oregon anchor has an open PR of 2:01.75 and is an Olympic Trials semifinalist and NCAA runner up. She got the baton a curly hair behind a girl who split 2:02 in a distance not considered her specialty. It was also Lipari's 3rd anchor of the weekend.
Blaming the leadoff is a weak argument,. Who is to say that the second leg would have run the exact same time if the leadoff race a second faster? Relays do not work like that.
The race was totally winnable for Roesler, but she was bested by an amazing performance.
Would have been an AMERICAN RECORD if run earlier in the day.
As a big time D1 coach, I know.
so much debate about a 4x800, some stupid made up event that we won't see again until next year at Penn, rofl.
Emily Lipari is the single best relay runner in college track. She's done what she did to Roesler today on probably a dozen occasions.
yEAH I CAN'T BELIEVE THAT oREGON LOST THIS RACE TO A CRAPPY vILLIANOVA TEAM I MEAN Roesler ran the fastest 800 in the world this year i think but sucked today. But at least she came back 1 hour later and ran a 52 flat 400 to give Oregon the National Leading time in the 4 by 400 on the Ladies side.
If Villanova is such a CRAPPY Team then Oregon must be a bunch of fat out of shape girls just getting into running. I mean they did lose to such a crappy team after all.
OR
We can talk about this logically and mention how great all eight of those girls ran. Lipari wanted it more. And so she out ran the competition. And that's why Villanova won....oh and pac12fan just to add insult to injury....three of the legs on Villanova's team were running their third race of the penn relays. Yea Oregon lost to THAT.
ya, they could probably win the 4x800 at the World Championships this year! Villanova rules!
