Miles Batty 3:49.20 mile!!

Mike Boit (track PR of 3:49) ran a 3:28 here, so I guess Miles' time is worth 4:10? Great job Miles!

I think Susan Kuijken winning the women's race in 4:17 is more impressive.

According to mapmyrun.com, the course has about 100 feet of elevation drop.

He should have run down this street in New Zealand.

What is the optimum slope for a race like this? Any ideas?

could you run the mile over a slope as steep as the one at the start here with out loosing control.

This race course looks like it had a big drop at the beginning and then a pretty level run to the finish.

What were the conditions for the race? Cold/humid/wet/windy?

Also, since it's a point-to-point course, wind speed and direction are important. The 3:28 guy may have been propelled forward by a strong, favorable wind. Any wind data?

That guy in the cape ran a pretty good 40 seconds at least even if he didn't run the full mile.

I'm pretty sure that the course is slightly different than when Mike Boit, Steve Scott, etc. ran it. There's less of an elevation drop now. Obviously guys like Ryan Gregson and Miles Batty aren't 20 seconds slower than Steve Scott or John Walker

I wasn't aware it was a different course now. Then I retract my earlier comment too.

Boit's 4 corners singlet is awesome.

You are correct. The steep hill at the start was not part of the course this year. They started the race on the beginning of the gentler slope down queen street and finished on the flat. So the massive drop as seen in Boit's race of a few decades ago is no longer included.

Another note if anyone is interested. Mahe Drysdale, the London single skulls (rowing) gold medalist competed in the 'clash of the codes' race and ran 5:09. Also, Hamish Carter, the retired triathlete who won gold at athens, won the clash of the codes mile in 4:52.

If you factored in friction I'm pretty sure they would.

From the research I've done, the original course dropped around 200 feet whereas the new course only drops 80-100. A very significant difference.

Wouldn't surprise me if a few younger Americans run 3:49 on flat ground this year.
