I understand that the restrictions pre-trial should not amount to an imposition of punishment before a verdict, but seriously, allowing foreign travel to a murder suspect seems ludicrous to me. He can travel across the length and breadth of SA living just a grand life while awaiting trial.
the thing about a free society (and Im imposing American standards without knowing much about the principals of the South African legal system)...you need a reason to impose restrictions, not a reason not to...
Just because its not that egregious of a restriction to bar him from international travel (an arguable point as his entire livelihood depends on international travel...though granted I doubt he'll be invited to many meets right now), that doesn't give us the right to impose the restriction without reason
If they'd said there was a legitimate increase in the risk of him escaping by allowing him international travel, that would be worth listening to and may even hold some weight
my only point is that "he killed someone, I can't believe theyre letting him travel" are completely ignorant arguments...
I can't imagine a scenario in the U.S. where someone accused of murder would be allowed to leave the country. Am I wrong? As others said, seems ludicrous to allow Oscar to leave South Africa.
I am told 1st hand that this is all a plan for OP to disappear and never stand trial for his crime of killing. No meet director would ever pay him a dime to compete in their meet now and the judge was told this I can promise you. SA justice system is corrupt if you can't already tell and the judge was bribed into allowing this with the idea that Oscar leaves and never returns to SA so that the judge doesn't have to make the decision to put OP behind bars for life. No country should EVER allow anyone charged with murder to leave the country. No state in US does.
For those trying to defend SOB OP keep in mind that OP has admitted to committing murder, its only a question of what degree or level. Media in SA should demand this judge to resign and appoint someone who has not been bought off.
So he is allowed to leave "for competitions (essentially work judge is saying) but the trial is in June and the earliest races outside SA are in mid May at earliest. Thats if ANY meet director would even consider an invite. I see this as a total smoke screen. OP will be much like Wikileaks dude living rest of life on lam.
At least the dude can get some a** outside SA, something he will NEVER again get in SA after the way his last "love" ended up. I mean what woman would even give the guy a second after all this?

Hey, OJ practically beheaded his ex-wife but he was still pulling young blondes after the trial. Some people are just stupid.
The more things change, the more they stay the same. As a South African, I can say that we still have the most racist nation on earth. If Pistorious had black skin, he would be sitting in jail until trial. This is about privilege and race. If the IAAF let's him compete I will vomit.

Wow! And you thought the legal system was lenient here.

Are you saying he's Ready For Take OFF?

Next time he has to appear before the court is in June but that won't be the trial. Not quite sure what they will be doing then (perhaps setting the date for the trial). Trial likely won't begin until after outdoor season is over

My thoughts exactly! If the court system is too corrupt to convict OP, I'll be openly cheering for anybody who wants to carry out some vigilante justice against him. Where's Dexter when you need him?
I am not a lawyer but what I don't understand:
Obviously he shot his gf, she died. He admits it, so the question is not if he has to go to jail but for how long. Why not just keep him in jail unti the process and subtract the months until then from the sentence?

because if he did it accidentally or with a reasonable belief of danger to himself he isnt guilty of anything...
According to Oscar himself the shooting was not an accident. He's using the "threat of an intruder" defense, but SA law apparently prohibits just shooting someone if you aren't in immediate danger. Not sure how someone locked in a bathroom poses an immediate threat, but we'll see how this proceeds in court. As others have said, if he was black and not famous, he'd be locked up waiting for his trial.

if youre not famous its a lot easier to flee and disappear...
the race card is bullshit

If he wants foreign travel in order to compete, doesn't he have to be invited to a meet. What dirtbag RD would invite him to a meet?
It's all about the money, dawg. Having Pistorius at your meet is a huge marketing move. Sure, you look like a "dirtbag RD," but if it's good for the bottom line, someone will do it.
He should get down on his knees and thank the court. Oh wait, he doesn't have any knees.

okay, for like the umpteenth billionth time:
1. "accidentally" does not apply he did not discharge the gun while cleaning it, he stated he basically emptied the magazine into what he knew to be another human being
2. he was wrong about it being an intruder, therefore his belief was incorrect and he will be guilty of at least culpable homicide
3. given that his belief was wrong, I think most people would say it was also not reasonable to think she was an intruder, but that can be left for trial
in any event, the dude will be sentenced to jail, has admitted the killing, but is free to travel the world
more interesting will be if countries grant him admittance based on his pending criminal charges (just because a meet issues an invitation does not mean the country will give admittance)
school is out, enjoy recess
