In terms of "impressiveness" or "fitness equivalence" or what ever you want to call it, what is the 800 and 2 mile version of a 4 minute mile?
My guesses would have to be 8:40.0 and 1:48.00.
I'm probably wrong but I think only 4 American high schoolers have gone under 8:40 and only 5 American high schoolers have gone under 1:48.
IAAF scoring tables equate 3:59.99 with 1:48.33 and 8:33.75.
webb's 3:53 is the most impressive high school distance time of all.
but what's more impressive- granville's 1:46 or verzbicas's 8:29?

High schoolers (younger people in general) have better speed than endurance. Thus for an adult a 4:00 is about as hard as a 1:48.5 and 8:33, for high schoolers it probably is more like 1:48.0 and 8:40.

In 1939, when the mile WR was 4:06, and the 1500 WR was 3:47, the 800 record was 1:46.6. It had been sub-1:50 since 1932.
Shortly after the mile/1500 finally reached 3:42/4:00 in the mid-50's, the 800 WR was lowered to 1.45.6.
Either everyone liked the 800 and was much better at it, or the 4-minute equivalent is 1:45.

I didn't know so few highschoolers run below 1:48 flat.
I saw Webb's 1:47 in person.
I dove a couple hours to see him and remember the disappointment when he came through the first lap in 54.
No rabbit . No real competition to push him. He did have someone close at the 400 but was on his own the whole second lap.
Then you could see he was picking it up on the backstretch.
The gap between him and second place kept growing.
I clicked my watch and heard a reaction form the people around me.
Then I was surpised to see 1:47.
He may have had a shot at the record in an ideal race. Surely could have run 1:46 high.
Amyway, I always thought that 1:47 high was a sub 4 equivalent.

^^This. Even more true for girls. Witness all the girls who have run at or near 2:00, but only Cain ever has dipped below 4:33.
Harbig was ahead of his time, his record stood for around 15 years (plus the Germans were experimenting with amphetamines). The training of the time was much more similar to what current 800 guys do compared to what milers do (higher mileage)

A side question about George Kersh. He's five months older than me. I graduated from high school in 1986 but he graduated in 1987? He was 19 years old when he set the 800m national high school record.

George Kersh was born March 7, 1968 and was 19 when he graduated HS, but was still very much eligible for HS competition as he was 18 on the eligibility snapshot date of August 1.
Mississppi rule: "Any pupil who becomes 19 years of age prior to August 1 shall be ineligible for interschool competition."
Just curious why he was a year behind in school? Just seems a bit odd.

Hispanics can be white as the two are not mutually exclusive. The majority of Spaniards, Argentines, Chileans, and Uruguayans are white hispanics and there are some white hispanics in probably every latin country. Even in the Caribbean - Marco Rubio for example who is of Cuban descent is both white and hispanic. Manu Ginobili, Ricky Rubio, Christina Aguillera, and Cameron Diaz are some more examples of famous white hispanics.

10,000m WR - 28:54.2
So by extension I suppose those marks must be the equivalent of 1:45.7 for 800 meters
Apples and oranges. Records in shorter distances don't drop as fast as records in longer distances.
Records from now compared to 1955:
100m: 9.58/10.2 = .939
100m non-Bolt: 9.69/10.2 = 9.5
400m: 43.18/45.4 = .951
800m: 100.91/105.7 = .954
1500m: 206/220.8 = .932
mile: 223/239 = .933
5000m: 757/831 = .911
10000m: 1567/1734 = .903
marathon: 123.63minutes/137.65minutes = .898
Sub-1:47's were around long before 4-minute miles, and they weren't outlier times, there were plenty of them.
Why can't high schoolers break the 1955 800 WR? Who knows. People say they're good sprinters, but they're only a little better than 1955 in most sprints, worse in the 800, much better in the mile and 1500, then worse again over two miles, then slightly better over 5000 and 10000. There's no real pattern to what events they're best at.
