Who is Duncan MacDonald? Just wanting to know.
Who is Duncan MacDonald? Just wanting to know.
Duncan ran for Stanford in the early '70's. I think that he ran all of the distances. Thru the rumor mill I think that he lives and coaches in Hawaii.
A Stanford grad and now
an anesthesiologist...once held the AR for 5000m (13:19), breaking Pre's 13:21.
In 1976, he made the Olympic team along with Buerkle and Geis.
OK thnax for the info!!!
He also was the guy who broke Prefontaine's 5,000 meter record with a 13:19 and winner of two (I believe) Honolulu Marathons.
As someone said, MacDonald was pretty tough from 1500 to the marathon. If I remember correctly, he and Don Kardong (4th Montreal Olympics Marathon) went to Stanford and trained together. There was a story about the two of them running the Sunkist Invitational on a Friday or Saturday (MacDonald in the mile and Kardong in the deuce) and then showing up at a marathon the next day and running pretty well (2:17 maybe).
... sub 4 also 3:58.4 in '72
The coolest thing about Duncan McDonald is his immortalization in Hunter S. Thompson's "The Curse of Lono." I think Playboy sent Hunter down to cover the '80 Honolulu Marathon and Duncan won it. (correct me if I'm wrong)
If you ever want to read the coolest book on running (sans running) start saving your money. Amazon was charging a shit load for this out of print prize.
I don't believe "The Charge of the Weird Brigade" was a book, but an article in "Running" magazine, which was in circulation for a brief period in the late 70s/early 80s. But there's no doubt Hunter Thompson's coverage of the Honolulu Marathon of 1980 is one of the more interesting pieces of writing about running that has ever come off of the presses. If there was a book please enlighten me.
I've got an original copy of the mag. Any bidders?
I had that mag, & tons more stuff that I threw out, not good but you know Girl friends always trying to tidy up a bit....? What if anything do you think it's worth? THat "Running" Mag was Nike thang if I recall.
DM's daughter, Eri, is at Oregon, runs about 2:06 and is an academic all-American.
You can't post URL's to threads over the past few years that have already been taken down. But there are hard copies. It was just an issue of identifying who was actually behind the screen name and this was just accomplished recently.
You have to trust me on this one. If Steveu or John Moody think their innocent then let them get the IP numbers from Letsrun.com and try to sue. It will never happen. They finally got busted and they are getting JUSTIFIABLY exposed for all the harrassment they have been involved in over the years against an innocent minority.
