You've obviously never been around any Kenyan runners.
My forearms are bigger than the calves of some of the Kenyans I've met. And I have tiny forearms.
Tiny forearms like this?
15 1/4
136
5'8
What are you, some kind of freakin' pervert? Try craigslist - people will send you pics of their calves next to king cans & sh-t like that.
How about Asians? I've noticed fast Asian runners have bigger calves and legs. I see this at road races on some of elites from pics. You would expect the opposite given they're generally smaller frame/body size to begin with. I think Asian men generally don't have long slinky legs. Maybe because of the height, I don't know.
With Whites though, 95% of the elites have legs like Evan Jager and Rupp. Even thinner on Kenyans.

wow, Taco Truck, is that your resting calf size? for someone who's 5'8'', those are strong legs.
"wow, Taco Truck, is that your resting calf size? for someone who's 5'8'', those are strong legs."
It is strange. I have upper body like Jager but legs like Donn Cabral. I'm not Mexican despite my id. I'm Asian.
did you ever work your legs out in the weight room? heel striker?
or do you think it's genetics
If it is any consolation, I ran 16:11 in college and just went under 4:30 1600. That was only off like 45 to 50 MPW of joke div 3 training. I wish I did 80 to 100 mpw when i was young. There was no internet back then so who knew what real training was like. I though only Olympians trained like that. I think I could gone under 15. Too late now.
"or do you think it's genetics"
I think it is genetics. I played a lot of soccer when I was little. Like everyday for 2 hours at least.
Definitely forefoot-midfoot striker. I do hear what you're saying about using less of hip muscles and more of calf muscles. I do have weak hip/glute muscles I think. At least compared to my legs. Who knows maybe I do run more with calf muscles as a result. It is very hard to self-analyze these things.
"did you ever work your legs out in the weight room?"
Never. I think I should have worked on my hip, glute and upper bodies though.
i think those are good times, but what fascinates me is how different body types produce results.
i have always thought my calves were too big to run fast times because when i watch the elites/kenyans in the states, everyone had skinny calves.
i'm 5'10 and roughly 15'' when unflexed so i was very surprised to see your calf size and height. even more surprised by your pr's.
i'm a high 15s guy. and i think you can get back to low 16s with a year or 2 of dedicated, smart training.

Unfortunately, I'm already past 40. I be glad to break 17 now. I am back to running 50 to 60 mpw mostly because I enjoy it.
I remember back in 80s and early 90s, the "elite" runners didn't uniformly have those skinny calves. At least US runners. Now, they're all built like that. Maybe those with that kind of physiques are more attracted to the sports or get injured less because less mass? Who knows and there are always exceptions. Look at Donn Cabral. That guys is built like a 400 meter runner.
yea, that's what i mean. look at yuki kawauchi, too, and a lot of japanese runners like you said. relatively bigger calves.props to you for running 17s and be past 40.

You just have to train as hard as you can and see where it goes. Good luck to your training too! Don't worry about the calves. You're not the only one who thought it.
