Have you? Or at least come close to this in that amount of time?

Yep
Is this abnormal? I'd imagine with good coaching and the actual desire + year round training, it'd be pretty feasible for someone that's not void of talent.
Yes. This though is well beyond almost every person on the planet and requires some leg speed. But I'd think if you were the kid near 6:00 for the field day mile then two years to drop 90 seconds is reasonable.
I ran 5:51 in 8th grade with 10 mpw(mostly jogging). Then 9th grade I ran 4:36 and 10:06 with more serious running.
Ran 4:41 after 6 months of training and 4:32 after one year, so yes, many people, including me, have run 4:30 or faster after 2 years of running. After 2 years, 4:20.
I ran 4:26 after only 9 months of running. Senior year of HS, got tired of being a slacker and turned out for cross country that fall. Decided I liked running. Ran the 4:26 at the state track meet the following spring.
Wished I would have turned out sooner.
I ran 4:40 after two years, but I started running at 12, so it's a bit different than if you start at 16+
A year after 4:40 I ran 4:24.

..What the hell? How much mpw were you going on at that time? What are you running now?
I broke 5 minutes in the high school gym class mile on the track. Never ran track or cross country in school.
Ran 435 in 9th grade after about 10 months of running. 414 as a junior. With proper training, I thinks a pretty typical progression for elite runners.
mr rupp ran 8:58 for two miles two years after starting running. I think it was two years after anyway.
Jim Ryun ran a 4:07 mile just ten months after starting to run...and that was 50 years ago! Amazing huh?
My first season of track, I ran 4:54. The next season, I went 4:20 in my 2nd year. I'm sure some runners can do much better, definitely doable.

You guys are so full of crap its unbelievable. Complete BS. Unless you had German Fernandez talent there's no way you ran a 4:26 after only 9 months.

i ran 4:12 1500m my first year.
After 3 months of running (1980) I ran constantly 1.500 m sub 4:15 (= 4:35) and after 1 year (1981) 4:08 (= 4:28). Nothing fancy!

At 19, I ran a 4:34 1600m within a month of starting to run. I don't think I actually broke a 4:30 mile officially but I did run 4:05 for 1500m during that first year along with a 15:26 5k, so I imagine I could have broken 4:30 for a mile then.

I doubt anyone went from a completely sedentary lifestyle to 4:26 in 9 months. The guys making these big improvements were probably soccer players or something before they started running so they already had a solid aerobic base and well-developed speed endurance.
