Serious topic, I'm not making fun of those people who for very legitimate reasons are not inclined to be competitive. But for those of us who are fast or for whatever reason ( life, injury, etc..) are trying to regain lost fitness, do you see any point in entering a race if you're not ready to compete at your best?
I used to think it was an ego thing but after moving away to a different town where nobody knew me, I still had a hard time with the whole thing. Isn't a race, by definition and philosophical construct, a contest between opponents?
And here's an even better question, perhaps getting to the root of the issue. If they eliminated all road races would you run workouts and push yourself in training, or just go out for long, easy runs (leaving the watch at home)?
Is racing about a result? About effort? Or having fun?
