I have a high IQ, and I'm failing high school

My older brother is very smart, very high test scores, flunked highschool, absolutely hated his teachers (who were women btw) and hated what public schooling was, basically favoritism and popularism mixed with socialism and liberalism.

He got his GED and joined the military, got out made a ton of money, over 200k in some retail trust his friend in the military told him about and is now going to college for free on the GI Bill and almost done with undregrad. He's taken some of that money and purchased other properties with it and is enjoying the rent income from it.

He's 25 and I'm 24 and I'm jealous of him because I graduated with honors from HS went to a good college on a partial scholarship, graduated magna and am now working long hours in a boring job just to save up for grad school and stay debt free.

I calculated that for all of my work, we will both have graduate degrees in a few years but he will probably have another 100k in the bank than I do and I got much better grades and spent many more hours in school studying.

IQ tests are virtually worthless. You can be the smartest mothafugga in the world, but if you aren't smart with how you approach your life you probably won't go anywhere. Be patient, be focused, and for the love of god put those brains to good use doing what you love!

I doubt the OP is the genius he claims to be. Either way, high school means nothing. It won't mean anything in the grand scheme of things. Stop crying about it

You need to hone your study skills (not everything is rote memorization, a lot of more advanced course work requires practice to the point where it becomes second nature) and time management skills. You may not be approaching your classwork in the right way.

The most intelligent in my family (as per formal IQ tests) were consistently the poorest and laziest students.

Are you being serious? Highschool in North America is obscenely easy and should require little or no studying for someone with an IQ of 140ish (based on his 99.6 percentile claim). What is this "advanced course work" you speak of/

You must either have attended a public high school or you currently teach in one. By "advanced course work" I mean rigorous honors courses- e.g., introduction to phyical chemistry, advanced physics, calculus, statistics. You know, classes with some degree of difficulty requiring some investment of time and brain power.

the OP is probably an underachiever of mediocre intelligence who is trying to justify his lack of effort in school. Nobody with an IQ that high would be failing high school. It's simply too easy to fail.

Those classes should still require very minimal studying (if any) for someone in the 99.6 percentile. The material just isn't very difficult.

He's not saying it's easy for him, dumbshit. He's simply stating (correctly) that even honors classes or AP classes should be fairly easy for somebody with an IQ of 140.

Honors classes should not be easy for people with high IQs, at least not if they are taught correctly by people with high IQs themselves.

Einstein failed out of school. It is not unusual for people with high IQs to perform poorly in school because they learn in different ways and are not adequately engaged with routine course work. Any teacher of an advanced placement class should understand this point and teach accordingly.

You don't have a high IQ. Like everything else the IQ tests have been dumbed down especially the online IQ test which inflate scores so you and others will feel good and recommend their site so they can get more "hits" and eventually sell ads. The true medium IQ is 100. The medium IQ of these bogus online IQ tests and the new dumbed down ones are close to 135.

Regardless, intelligence is relatively worthless in comparison to factual and usefull knowledge. Even worse people thinking they are intelligent and being told they are intelligent is very detrimental for kids. When kids hear "you are so smart" they confuse that with knowledge when in fact the know nothing or less than nothing.

Well, you need to work on the "demonstrating" part. Applying what you've learned is an important life skill, so take it seriously. Forget what the IQ test said.

You Are not close to bring a genius OP.

If you simply don't try at all then that is one thing but if you are trying and failing high school you are not intelligent period.

I'm not genius and I took honors and AP classes at what is officially ranked as one of the top 50 private schools in the country. I studied about 1 hr per night and got all A's and B's.

It's just not hard at all for anyone with average intelligence. Some effort is required tho.
