come on you two enough self promotion...what is this UNC circa 2010
As someone who knows ...
Furman will never be a contender in Division 1. Or Division 2. Maybe Division 3. Not NAIA.
Furman is too expensive. It attracts white runners from privileged backgrounds. That doesn't get it done, not at the top. You have to have a streak of mean in you to be a good runner. You have to be hungry in a way these kids will never understand.
See you on the swamp rabbit concrete.

Wow! You must be right. Wait then again don't most the good distance runners in the US tend to come from upper to middle class white families? And money does not have much to do with it if they are giving the kids scholarships. The kid could be dirt poor and still go to Furman on a Full Ride.
Everyone on this board can keep speculating about what they are going to do or not do at Furman or we can all wait 3-4 years and see what actually happens.
Right now apartmently they have 3 pretty good guys committed.

As apposed to the other schools that attract underprivileged African American xc runners? Right.......
Not to pour water on the fire,...and not taking away from the definite impressiveness of their Jr. stats, but XC All-Americans need to be able to run a 2 mile time in the 8:30's. They are still 30 seconds from that.
Let's assume they get down to 8:50 as seniors (might not even happen if they don't get into the right races). If this happened, it indicates to me they are highly trained HS athletes (with the potential to hit a dead-end on their talent already - a la York HS athletes (typically) ).
Then they go to Furman,...they have very few athletes that will push them in practices and races. They become totally dependent on their own talents to continue developing. A recipe for going nowhere fast.
Or the two fairly good runners that are registered full-time assistant coaches on their staff (Cory Leslie and Jeff See, both Trials finalists)?
The bigger obstacles (and ones they won't be able to overcome) are how tough the SE region will be next couple years to recruit and compete against and how expensive the school is?
How many runners does Furman have going to Nationals this weekend??!!!!!

My understanding is that they are putting 12.4 scholarships into distance, so I wouldn't think the cost of their school is going to be a big impediment to recruiting. Recruiting vs. established powers always is but much easier in a sport like XC than a sport like basketball.

That means they can put a full .2 into the track program!!! They will be unstoppable. Watchout Texas A&M and Florida State!
their track team will be only distance, like iona, like ok state
Rumor is Josh Brickell just committed to Furman
Who is Josh Brickell and what are his PRs? For those of us who don't follow high school much...

5k: 14:45
Mile: 4:12
3200: 9:10
He dnf at Footlocker this year.
In track he could easily be a sub 9 guy in a fast race.
Josh DNF this year at the footlocker meet, but was extremely sick heading into the race. However, last year he finished 8th at the footlocker meet and had been running much better this season until he got sick. He finished second at the south region only loosing to Sean McGory.
