I thought the standard times for the military were somewhere around 15 minutes for 2 miles. I bet there were plenty of guys barely making that. And there's no way the got whipped into that degree of better shape after qualifying. Most soldiers will run like a mile or two a day and do a bunch of calisthenics, then spend the rest of the day playing cards and shooting at cans.

So unless he was in a super elite group like the SEALS or something, he's full of it. And considering that he is now fat, it is unlikely that he was physically fit enough ever to be part of an elite group.

Plus he's a man, so there's that. I don't brag that my 5k PR would destroy the competition at women's nationals.

Maybe 6 minutes per kilometer.

Even the standards for rangers is 5 miles in 40 minutes (ie 8:00 / mile)

Challenge him and his army friends to a local certified half marathon.

I get this shit all of the time. A guy who just moved into my area from NY saw me doing strides after a run. After I finished, I walked over to his driveway and introduced myself and made small talk. After a while he tells me used to run 6 minute pace everyday a few years ago. He looked NOTHING like a runner. And if this was "only a few years ago" - wouldn't he have been so obese now?

It's easy for people to lie about their speed/times/pace and how much they used to bench press. Much harder to lie about whether they played professionally or collegiately.

My wife is a captain in the Air Force and I consistently wipe the floor with anyone that shows up for the races our base puts on. Some joker that lived down the street thought he was going to win the 5K fun run last spring because he usually finishes first when they do their 1.5 mile PT test. I was halfway done cooling down by the time he finished.

There are only about 5-10 people in each service branch that are capable of holding 6-minute mile pace or faster for a marathon (look at the results of Marine Corps or Air Force marathon) although you kind of have to give a pass to most people you talk to because they just don't have any concept of running times.

Maybe he meant 6 miles at 7 minutes pace. But I bet that is even to fast.

One of my old friends in the marines said that one guy in his group ran a 5k in 11 minutes. I told him that it was a lot faster than the world record. He just shrugged his shoulders and said, "He did it".

My cousin told me that when he was in the army they had to do 1,000+ pushups everyday.

People in the military like to make things up and there is no way to reason with them.

Second, many non-runners call anything between 6:00 and 7:00 as "6 minute pace". Runners tend to be a bit more exact about numbers, so you should take that into account. In other words, make sure that 6 minute pace means the same thing to both of you.

Third, 7 miles at 6 minute pace is hardly exceptioal. Anyone remotely athletic should be able to do that after a period of training. Think about it, there are people running 26 miles nonstop at 4:45 pace.

Lastly, the guy might just have an exaggerated memory.

Oh, come on. He wasn't claiming his daughter was going to be on the USA team in Rio. A mid 18 5K for a high school girl is a good time. She certainly won't be qualifying for Footlocker, but do you have to be national caliber to be "pretty good"?

A college teammate of mine had a daughter who ran mid 18's for 5K in cross country and she got scholarship money at a Division I school.

The army measures a lot of stuff in "clicks" (i.e. km). So 6min kms sounds a lot more reasonable. Fat old nurse probably didn't realize the difference.

No, what's elitist and nonsensical is runners getting so defensive when someone claims to be able to string together a few 6:00 miles. Some of you guys act like running is the hardest and most important athletic ability. You start calling people liars when you have no proof. You show the same attitude to cross fitters.
