Amica Newport Marathon:
Goal: top 5 / sub 2:55
Result: 6th / 2:58
I didn't get quite the result that I wanted, but given that this was my first marathon, the course was tough, and that I had a crazy week just before, I can't complain too much.
On Tuesday of this week, I learned that I had to be in San Francisco Thursday and Friday for a job interview. So, in the three days before my race, I was on a plane for about 13 hrs, slept for somewhere between 18-19hrs, and was just generally pretty stressed. Overall not a great way to cap off my taper, but it also could have been worse.
In terms of the race itself, I woke up feeling pretty good. I went through the half in 1:26 feeling absolutely great (although in hindsight it was definitely still too fast). We were running mostly along the coast, and it was seriously windy (as in, windier than I think anything I've ever run in before--somebody said 40mph gusts). The half marathoners were with us for the first half, though, so I was able to block some of the wind and it didn't bother me much. I was feeling twinges in my right quad starting around mile 12, which had been tight for no apparent reason earlier in the week, but no real issues.
In the second half, all the half marathoners dropped off, making the wind a lot more difficult and leaving me pretty much on my own support- and motivation-wise. I passed my last guy around mile 15, and after that I was totally on my own--nobody passed me, and I didn't pass anybody else, nor was there much hope of either of those things happening. Around mile 18, my quads started seriously tightening up and we moved on to an out-and-back loop that was a lot hillier than I expected and in which there were pretty much no spectators other than at the aid stations (every 2 miles) and the occasional couple sitting in their front lawn. My quads kept getting tighter and tighter, making the hills really tough especially given the lack of people around me to motivate me. I managed to pick it up a bit over the last few miles and the 5th guy came in to view, but the damage was already done, and I wasn't going to hit either of my goals.
