Masters Weekend Runs and Races

Thanks for starting us off, Dave. Which sport is that you're talking about? ;-)

Over here I've been easing back into running after a week off with a cold. In between coughing up yucky stuff, I got in 43 miles, with 3 steady runs in the 6:00-6:30 area and half a dozen short hill sprints. I tried to make up the difference with lots of weights.

Today was my son's high school's big charity race for the second year, so I was up till midnight making signs and out marking the course in the frost early. We managed to book a nice day of sunny weather and had 320 people turn out for a 5k or 10k round a really fun cross country course, with a level of razzamatazz you don't get much in cross country. An Olympic judoka led a warmup and ran the first 200m with his genuine 2012 torch. It turns out the money we raised last year has helped fund four really promising junior runners/jumpers and several paralympians, and hopefully we persuaded a lot of kids that running can be fun. And I even won a magnum of champagne - that NEVER happens in "real cross country"!

Next Sunday I will be posting from sunny California - can't wait!

Long week for me trying to recover from yet another calf strain. I'm really good at straining my calves these days. It is almost an annual thing so I am getting very good at healing them also.

I limped through runs every day. Nothing special. I'm racing the Army 10 Miler next weekend so I hope to be 'limp free' by then. Even if I'm not limp free, I'll run because it's such a great event. I know I can get through 10 miles....

Winter has officially arrived so that means no sun for a while......like 6 months.

My achilles flared up again last weekend, so I've put away my running shoes for the rest of the year. Depressing because I was coming along nicely and workouts were going well (e.g. 18x400 w/ equal rest). I didn't do anything all week until a 20 mile bike ride yesterday. I think today I'll just watch football. My doctor gave me a referral to an ortho specialist, but don't have an appointment yet.

Hope everyone else is doing well. Fall arrived here this week. We even had a dusting of snow on the mountain Friday morning, but it was gone by afternoon.

Managed three runs this week. After my sons football game we had a tailgate and the scale reflected how much I ate. I look at food and gain weight these days. Post em up !!

Back to the grind finally, took some time off to let a little achilles flare-up cool down. Mostly short treadmill runs and managed 9 runs in 6 days. I'm on a bidness trip to Chicago, Rochester, Detroit, San Antonio, Chicago, Orlando over a 16 day period.

In Richester now, beautiful fall colors.

Beavs are 5-0, their best start since 1937. Now ranked #8, Ducks #2. I think this is the first time in a long time that both Oregon schools are in the top 10.

How'd everybody do at this week's USATF 5K XC Champs?? Any results?

Crazy fun time to be an SF Bay Area sports fan...Giants historic play to stay alive, 49ers mostly impressive play...and, what about A's?

My own "athletic career" realized 46 more miles this week mostly comprised of decent paced long runs interspersed with hobbling jog sorta recovey runs

With just 5 weeks til Philly Marathon, hoping this 56.5 year old carcass can survive the requisite work to finish this, my very final marathon.

Who else here has a 42K effort pending???

well after many struggles i am back running with my team Compex/CalCoast. we won the 40+ and 50+ at the 5k national championships. Tim Gore won the individual with Pete Magill, of Compex/CalCoast, winning the age graded.

That is all i really know as the usatf has still not put up results. pretty sad that results for a National Championships are not posted on the website over 24 hours later. It would be nice if the usatf would join the 21st century eh?

i think i was in 32nd overall. not my best race by a long stretch but not my worst either.

Congrats to my teams though! i ran as the sole member of the "B" team.

Next up is a college invite this weekend and then time to get ready for Kentucky!

Nice race. I was also in this and have to say I was very impressed with the level of comp that showed. That course is a beating - never a straight stretch to find your stride, always turning and running up and down. A true cross country course for sure. To see that many guys under or near 17:00 on that course was very impressive. And I agree, no results a day and 1/2 later is pathetic. Oh well.

I ran a xc race at Van Cortlandt in NYC - it was no less than 90 seconds slower than I ran an xc race 7 days ago. But I ran it well - aggressively and I beat an entire high school team, which was nice for a 45 year old.

52 miles incl 10 x 400 and a race - things are good.

I'm in awe of the HS kids running 15 flat on that tough Balboa course. Many turns, varied footing on grass, hard dirt, big wood chips, roots, several road crossings, 1 very tough hill done twice, and rolling everywhere else. No place to get a rhythm but that is the kind of course I do best on. Coming down the hill the second time, my thighs were hammered, but I had just managed to get by KevinB so I was happy but running scared. Even though he was beaten up from a most of a marathon the week before, I'll take it. Got by a few of my other Cal Coast buddies too. Strong race for me.

The 50s field was exceptional.

I was happy that I and my ATC teammates managed to get 5 for the USATF XC 5k Champs Saturday. I'm at work after coming back from CA on a redeye and getting in at 6:30 a.m. UGH...I too am shocked that there are no results. Proud of our team for 2nd in the 40's. I personally had a very good race finishing 11th OA, 3rd 45-49 and just getting under 17 (16:58). Am very motivated for the next 8 weeks of training before Kentucky and Clubs. Having only watched the Footlocker races on TV I agree with the earlier poster that this was one tough course that threw evrything at you to destroy rhythym. Very nice to visit So Cal and enjoyed a nice 15 mile long run yesterday from Solano Beach up the Torrey grade and past the golf course. Beautiful! Have a great week everyone.

i didn't see it, but lots of people were talking about the arm block that mahvera, the cal coast guy, put on gore in the final straighaway. maybe they are recalculating the scores after a dq?

Nice race. So you were one of those old guys with "45-49" on their backs that came in ahead of me (I'm 41). I also saw quite a few "50-54" tags ahead of me as well and knew I was in over my head. It was fun to get a taste of how much talent there is out there at the masters level. Now, I think I need to enter a local low profile 5k so I can run 17:00ish, be in the top 5 and get an ego boost :)
