So I was watching the "Race for the Cure" in downtown Lexington this weekend (cheering on my daughter in her first ever 5k jog), and this very fast woman ran in the event. Now this event doesn't usually draw many (if any) fast runners, and I thought I knew who all of the local fast runners were, so it really curious to know who this fast woman was.
Then, I saw a post on Facebook of the top three finishers and it stated that she was Ann Detmer, a new assistant T&F and XC coach at UK. So how long has this been common knowledge?
I did a google search, and as recently as late July, she was still listed with Cal. The only hit I got with any ssociation between Ann Detmer and UK is on their own website as a graduate assistant:
http://www.ukathletics.com/sports/c-track/mtt/detmer_ann00.html
and even then, it's kind of hidden, because she's not listed on the coaching staff:
http://www.ukathletics.com/sports/c-track/spec-rel/c-track-coaches.html
but does show up as a coach on the team roster.
Any rate, we're thrilled to have her. I'm sure she'll do great things with the runners she works with. So will we see a resurgence of the women's distance program at UK (we do have a couple of standouts this year in XC)? Time will tell, but I sense that things have been moving in a positive direction here at UK since this summer.
Oh, her time was 16:50 on this not very ideal course (most everyone I know seems to run slow times on it.)
