I actually had resented Leonel Manzano a little because I had never seen him embrace his Mexican side. He was in fact born in Mexico, but always thought of him as a sell out or a Mexican trying to be white. Now with this gesture, I actually respect him for embracing who he is and where he comes from. It's shameful that most people in the US know very little about where they come from and just chose to label themselves as "Americans".
You all have a history and roots much deeper than you think. Don't bash Manzano for choosing to celebrate his roots, and be proud of who he is and where he comes from.
Look into your past, embrace your roots, and always be proud of who you are and where you come from.
Is anyone else losing respect for Leo Manzano running around with the Mexican flag??

You're just making crap up. I can see you're an open border fan...asking to prove citizenship is racist, right? I live in L.A., Mexican-Americans run the place so I'm not sure who is treating them poorly. The illegals are here sucking the system dry and then they wave the Mexican flag demanding that they be given citizenship for breaking the law.

Mexicans are still in the process of recovering the stolen lands you mention. Mexicans call it El Norte, or Northern Occupied Territories temporarily controlled by the Nazi-Zionist regime in Washington D.C.
-
Yeah and the Mexicans stole the land from the Indians. But you're right they have reconquered the land and turned it into a 3rd world country. Soon it will be just like home.
-
The answer is yes (both flags carried). Wrapping oneself in the American flag is of relatively recent origin in the Olympics, and is itself borderline disrespectful to the flag (which is not to be worn as a garment). But now it appears to be accepted practice, and the bigger the flag the better. It's hard to see how wrapping oneself in two (or more flags) of different nations is much more disrespectful to the American flag - although flag etiquette requires that the American flag always be displayed above and to the right (viewer's left) of other flags. I think Leo Manzano actually did that, although one doubts that the subtleties of flag etiquette are known to him or any other American Olympic athlete.

Idiota...Mexicans ARE the decendents of the Indians ignorant fool. The majority of the Mexica people are mestizo, which is part indian, part white. Go back to school. -

It great to be proud of your roots. However, you should not be disrespectful to the country that gave you the opportunity to succeed. -
Mexico is a 2nd World Country and not a developing country. Sure Mexico is poor compared to the US. The roads and sidewalks are cracked and in disrepair like England and Germany. But Mexico has a better standard of living than Spain, Greece, Russia, Turkey, Israel, Ukraine, Poland, Czech, Hungary, etc.

Not cool.. Every thing he has is because he live in the USA. That moron might have cost his little Mexican butt a ton of endorsement money. The first image of him is him trotting around with a Mexican flag.
-
No you are the idiot. You should spend less time in Chicano studies bullshit classes.

In a logical world, YOU would be the one correctly labeled a racist.
"... sell out"?!! ".... trying to be white"?!! How exactly does one "be white"?
But in this PC world, your attitudes are GTG. -

yeah it's a wonderful place. That's why millions have illegally crossed the border for a better life. -
Every athlete I've seen interviewed talks about how important it is to represent his/her country. I must admit that I cheer for every American athlete during the olympics. During other competitions I don't seem to care.
If an athlete waves around a flag from his home country and not the country he's representing, then what's the point?
It's a slap in the face to all the American athletes who sacrifice so much to wear the American flag.
Had he won gold, would he have requested Mexico's national anthem to be played? -
Manzano is better than Felix Sanchez, who was born, educated and lives in the U.S., but runs for the Dominican Republic. I don't care which flags he waves, as long as he won the medal for us.

Well you sure are a liar. He carried the American flag. To say that he waved a flag from his home country and not the country he's representing is bull. -
Mexicans like Leonel Manzano, Roberto Costas (Bob Costas), German Fernandez, Jose (Joe) Montana, Carlos Rey (Chuck Norris), Alberto Salazar, Ted Williams, Tomas Cruise (Tom Cruz), Joaquim Cruz, Rudy Chapa, Governor Richardson, etc. have their own culture and pride. Mexico is an ancient land where some of the most advanced ancient nations appeared after people migrated from the initial birth of civilization in Kenya, Ethipoia, Sudan, and Egypt. We should appreciate others and understand the pride in their people and culture.
-
I don't mind him flying the flag of another country, but why would you wanna display the flag of a shit country like Mexico.

No one said he shouldn't be proud of his culture. It is a far different matter to wave the flag of another country when you are wearing the uniform of America. It's very disrespectful. -

There's an easier way to look at this...
How would people have felt if any other athlete carried around the flag of the country they and/or their family left in order for greater opportunity in the USA?
If Rupp had carried around a UK flag as well, or a Finnish Flag?
Or Centrowitz carried an Guyanese flag along with the USA flag last year at WC's?
I think some Mexicano's want to have it both ways. They want to live in the USA and still have great pride for Mexico...
Which, quite frankly, for the average American seems weird...considering how crappy so much of that country is -- as their existence here speaks to.
People do weird stuff in the name of their heritage.
