Okay, I just saw the replay of Pistorius's 45.44 in his 400m heat. He was clearly "cooling it" in the last ~40m and is ready to go sub-45.
A few years back, his start and acceleration were terrible, and he always came through in the final 150 or so just to be competitive. This time, he was basically running with some good 400 guys through the first 200--picked it up a notch the rest of the way, but never had to go to his top-end gear to finish second in the heat (and automatically qualify for the semis).
Based on the *way* he ran this race, I'm convinced that he can run WELL below 45secs and can get close to 44-flat. He should make the final pretty easily, and IMHO has a shot at medalling--on SA's strong relay squad, if not individually.
Like other posters, I think the man has no business racing able-bodied folks (any more than a wheelchair guy should have been in the 10,000m). I know, I know, "hate the game, not the player"--he's just taking advantage of the opportunity.
But he also took advantage of another athlete--the one who *didn't* advance out of the heats, because of Oscar--and I think he'll take advantage of another, and make the final. It's unfair to a pair of good athletes and it PISSES ME OFF.
