The... The African Looked Around!!!!
Marty Liquori 1985 World Cup men's 4 x 400 Relay.
With the team title on the line going into the last event, the first 3 legs (Walter Davis, Andre Phillips & Ray Armstead) were on world record pace and Armsstead was knocked completely off the track to his chest by Clark of Austrailia/Oceana who pushed the Russian into him at the final exchange. Armstead picks himself up off of the ground, re-enters the exchange zone and passes off to Michael Franks at a standing stop.
Franks takes off under control but has Thomas Shonlebe of East Germany, Innocent Egbuneke of Nigeria & Clark pulling away from the rest of the field. Off the last turn, Franks is at the back of the pack and making progress but running out of track fast. Inch by agonizing inch at the beckoning of the announcers he finally passes Egbuneke at the wire for the win and the team title.
Protests were flying everywhere but in the end only the African team was dq'd for dropping the baton. Don't know to this day if Franks knocked it out of his hand on the way by on purpose but it was the most exciting finish to a relay I ever saw with a friend involved.
