shorter, calling the 1988 olympic 800m: "it's kiprotich!"

oops, it was paul ereng who won.

charlie jones took the rap for the mistake, but shorter was the one who first yelled out "kiprotich!" toward the finish; charlie just followed his lead.

it was shorter who blew it; he should've known better...being frank shorter and all.

i had no problem telling that it wasn't kiprotich. he had a distinct "high knee action" style of running.

It's only been all downhill since if you are unrealistic.

It's a big world. The population has exploded since. The East Africans have emerged since. EPO came into play. The North Africans emerged. The USA is not all about running, it is about our core sports. X-Games has evolved since. You can't compare era's and times.

It just is what it is.

Would it be nice if a USA athlete won gold in something 800 and up? Sure.

Does it mean the enjoyment of the sport has gone down hill if one doesn't?

Well, like I said only if you are unrealistic.

Winning an Olympic Gold Medal is a nearly impossible task.

So much goes into it. Talent. Hard Work. Good fortune. And a zillion other little factors.

It is so hard to do, that to even have that goal, is something of a fools errand.

Every 4 years I see and hear American journalist hold USA athletes to this "go for the gold" ideal.

It's just not realistic.

The worst is when some athlete is just pressed by the interviewer as to their chances of winning gold -- and it is some athlete whom we all would know has no real chance at it. But there they athlete is having to say on camera etc. that they are "going for the gold."

Finally this year more athletes are saying things like they are going to do their best, but they also want to appreciate the Olympic experience.

Everyday citizens should consider that any athlete who makes the Olympics is a gold medalist in life already.
