Can someone point me to a thread or study that explains the residual effects of peds after stopping use? Or are there not any?

ventolin, you are right to point out that sprinters run faster in hotter weather. eugene did not have ideal conditions for sprinting and it never has produced the kind of times as elsewhere. yes, these times were terrific in this meet, but they would have been .05 better in texas. 9.80 and 9.86 are very impressive. Gatlin was always a tremendous talent and with the testosterone before and who knows what if anything now he is a contender for a medal behind Bolt and Blake. It would not be surprising to see Gay get ahead of Gatlin, however, because Gay is just getting his season going after injury, while Gatlin has been at full strength since last indoors.

It's boring sport made for idiots that watch sportscenter. It's like looking at fake tits all day while you get botox injections.
Wow. Well said.
No, not well said. Bolt ran all the way through the line for that 9.59. There was no cartwheeling or anything close to it.

Doping and steroids and all that crap don't even do anything. It's all just a mental trick to make you think you can run faster. Then when you do you get caught. Gatlin proves this by running about the same as before. I bet if Gatlin beats Bolt and is proven to be clean all you guys will be sucking his D and saying he's the greatest. I for one won't care since the 100 is more of a circus event. It's good for a few seconds of excitement and then you can move on to the real events.
Are you being serious? Gatlin running this fast does NOT prove that drugs do nothing. If anything, it might prove that he is in better shape than he was before. He's put in several years of training since he was busted. Training makes you faster.
And, the 100m is much more thrilling than the first 20 laps of a 10k.
Dry air really is denser than moist air:

I'm wondering then why performances are almost always slightly worse in humid conditions for sprints, throws, jumps.

Are you talking about Gatlin? How has he been miraculously turned around? He's been dominant all throughout his career dating back to high school and college. He has never had a bad year. When was this down period you speak of?
He was a 9.95 guy last year who didn't make the final of the World Championships. Dennis Mitchell and the rest of his team have got him on rocket fuel now.

I'm pretty sure he did a backflip with 20m to go.
I guess it's subjective. To me, 9.95 is not a down year considering he hadn't raced a full season in years
Justin Gatlin is beating up on guys who are just as dirty as he is and are just as dirty as the distance runners you all adore.
Sprintgeezer wrote:I still think Gatlin's stuck. He might get another .05 from the first 60m, which would get him in the vicinity of 9.85 basic, but I can't see him going any faster than that if he maintains his current top-end form. If he does get that 9.85 basic in the final, I think that's a reasonable shot for silver or bronze.
nonsense
i told you that 100m = 2*60m - 3.00, for elites who run a "perfect" race of quick rt
gatlin wouda been ~ 6.40 in his 9.80
if he finds 0.05s in 60m, that woud give him 6.35 & expected time of ~ 9.70
regardless, 9.85 basic is a nonsense estimate for him
by london he will be in 9.75 - 9.80 basic shape
It's quite difficult to run the fastest race of your life from the front. Gatlin lead the entire race essentially. Look at his race against Powell and his 9.77 WR and you'll see that he runs faster when he has to catch someone-- unlike Asafa Powell.
Vent is right. I absolutely cannot agree that Gatlin "peaks" at 9.85.
He'll max out around 9.75-9.80 ADJUSTED. He might be able to get into the legendary 9.6 range if he has a 2.0 tailwind.

God, I hope so.

Not true, that's just a mental thing that doesn't seem to affect the best imo.
Imo he will run a 9.74 adjusted, 9.85 is ridiculous, no way he's going that slow.
I would like to see Gatlin go 9.7x or 9.6x basic as much as the next person. I would dearly love to see him win gold in London, as the 100m is a circus.
Although I hope you guys are right, I can't believe it's possible until it actually happens--and if he does run a 9.7x or 9.6x basic, I will assume that he is doped to the max.
I maintain my logic on this board about a high 9.6x with a max wind being the best anybody could ever do as far as we know, except for possibly Bolt. There is no compelling reason to believe that Gatlin is faster than Bailey, or Gay.
And the suggestion that it's difficult to run the fastest race of your life from the front, in my experience that is the exact opposite of the truth. For many well-trained sprinters, there is nothing as good as being in front--it's just you, your body, and the wind.
OTOH, if you are poorly trained, it can sometimes be beneficial to race against those faster than you, so that you read off them and get that external cue to go faster, not having the ability to generate an effective internal cue. That is especially true in the 200m, less so in the 100m.

What logic is that? Why can no one run faster than 9.6? Why is Bolt the only person that can? Makes no sense to me, so can you explain how you came to these conclusions?
9.6 I doubt, but why would you think he's dopped based on that? You can't just say anyone who runs a certain time is dopped...
Gatlin said himself that his 9.80 was not he fastest he could have ran. He stated that for the last 20m he just held his form. Can we believe him on that?and if you do, can we say 9.75 ??
nonsense
bolt had 10.03pb before he ran 9.76
only an idiot wouda been going on argument
"he can't run 9.76 because it hasn't happened"
he already had 19.75pb at 10.03 stage & that wouda indicated high-9.8 ability at the time just off his 200
any serious 100 training & 9.7 wouda been entirely possible, albeit 9.6 was a surprise
as for doping insuation, that is drivel
you have no idea how fast any non-bolt coud go without doping, whether it is 9.70 or 9.60
moron
complete drivel
tyson ran 9.69 (+2) with poor start, as his groin woudn't let him drive properly outta the blocks, giving up close to 2m to safa in 1st 30m
if he'd had a healthy groin, he wouda gone ~ 9.60 on the day
your assertion is nonsense
