IAAF banned athlete breakdown by country, spring/summer 2012 edition

Expressing the numbers as a ratio of doping suspensions to unit of population penalizes smaller countries, so I have split the countries with three or more suspensions into groups of similar population size. Doping suspensions per athletics participation size would be a better measurement, but I don't know where that kind of info is readily available.

This would need a more thorough statistical analysis, but as a rough guide:

India – 1 per 53 million

China – 1 per 168 million

100 million – 350 million

Russia – 1 per 9 million

U.S.A. – 1 per 31 million

Brazil – 1 per 48 million

Nigeria – 1 per 54 million

50 million – 100 million

Italy – 1 per 15 million

France – 1 per 16 million

South Africa – 1 per 17 million

Great Britain – 1 per 21 million

25 million – 50 million

Ukraine – 1 per 7 million

Morocco – 1 per 8 million

Venezuela – 1 per 9 million

Kenya –1 per 11 million

Have you seen any cumulative statistics (perhaps over a period of, say, ten years)?

I've always been struck by the absence of Japanese athletes on these lists. (At least, I don't recall any notable positive doping tests of Japanese athletes.)

Like 2-time winner Mullings, or the five that got minor listings. You need to discriminate across cases -- does a marijuana positive really constitute or indicate major doping. Take all the minor cases and divide them by at least 5 and then look at the figures.

Also, the US has a lot of athletes in a lot of sports -- I am not sure how that is reflected in the summary statistics.

There aren't many distance runners in Morocco ... 4 would be like 10% of all distance runners in Morocco.

No you don't. If they have been suspended by the IAAF for a drug-related offense then the only differentiation is in how long they are suspended, which already takes into account the severity of the offense.

True, but that is reflected insofar as the statistical summary of IAAF drug-related offenses cited above covers only the sport governed by the IAAF, track and field.

No suspensions at all for Germany? I thought theres were like one or two cases.

IAAF data is for the period ending 2012/05/31 which appears to be the same day as the press release for Ezkyas Sisay.

So it looks like he just missed out getting into the IAAF database before the 2012/05/31 cutoff.

Goumri was announced in June after the cutoff date for inclusion in this report.

However, someone mentioned Steve Mullings who should be in this list, but for some reason his name doesn't appear in that PDF. Does anyone know why?

Seems like a major omission, considering it was a second offence.

A breakdown by the size of the T&F team would be an interesting look at the numbers. How many athletes did each country send to Worlds or sending to the Olympics? Four dopers is big number if you are only competing in the distance races.

Which of these countries hitorically field the largest team or sends the most athletes per event?

Its not the offseason yet. They also haven't been testing that hard in Jamaica since winter of 2009 when they were forced too.

Diack wouldn't want rigorous testing in Jamaica to spoil the party.

That's because a second offense of the caliber that Mullings got was/is a lifetime ban.

He's not serving a suspension and hence not on the list as he will never make a comeback.

I know that Mullings got a life ban, but there are others with life bans in that list (read the PDF linked in the first post).

So why are some life bans listed, but not Mullings and perhaps others?

2. Rashid Ramzi is an olympics gold medallist. He doped and denied our country gold.

I know, i know, i know. Bahrain!

3. Adil Khaouch, in a given season, comes from nowhere (during the season in question) and wins several golden league races denying others the winners' prize.

Those are but three.

Now, give me the Kenyan equivalent. You may include Susan Chepkemei.
