I would have thought he could run a 3:56 with a coed perched on his shoulders.

He's got to do two things...progress his fitness to the level it needs to be...and get used to racing again.
Really now? You figured that out all by yourself?
Bwagahahahhaha this is great all the Oregon athletes running like crap now!!!! What's worst is all the excuses from the lame LAME fanboys!!!!! Hey A Duck where are you now you sack of svit?!?? It's good for a runner to get kicked in the balls every now and then. Keeps them honest. We'll see if Wheating has the true spirit of a champ based on how well he comes back from this race.
The guy just came back from injury, and he ran a 3:56.77?
In my opinion, thats quite amazing. Now Lagat and Lomong were also very close to AW,so i dont know what all the fuss is about. Wheating just needs time, which he has. He will be fine.
He did fine. The guy has been hurt on winter and early spring. This is his 2nd race back. It sucks he has to round himself into shape at races like pre...Also, people that are uptight and serious about running usually aren't that great or end up like Alan Webb. God forbid he enjoys his life and likes to have a good laugh!
I think Bob Kennedy put it best when he said that post-collegiately you must leave the conmforts of what you've known (your old college coach, your old college town) and enter the professional realm. If that means spending 3 months in the winter in Australia..so be it (which he did btw..not 3 months but you get the idea).

This ^ gem shows too many people who post here have no respect for the sport we love. Pick the people you like and support them. If you feel you must post hate/troll posts your life is sad.

Or from Webb.

Unfortunately, it proves nothing of the sort.
Instead, I believe that it proves that it is really not a good idea for siblings to mate with each other.

Great aerobic engine as his 1500 pr shows; but too big, cumbersome and slow to change gears to ever win a title of substance. A shame.
Did anyone seriously think he as going to run a 3:50 and be in contention for the win?? Kiprop dropped a 3:49.40!!! Basically he tried to keep up with a ridiculous time-trial'ish pace and couldn't hang yet, and it totally wiped out any kick he might have had. If he would have gone out 5 seconds slower the first 1000 meters he could have dropped the hammer and maybe ran a 3:53ish time. Wheating will dominate the 1500, he is just knocking the rust off! Luigi will not be stopped!

Well he does need a little wind up on his kick but I don't think we can definitively make the statement above at this point. He's had some major set backs over the past couple years and if he can come out for a healthy year or two his progression will continue. He still has a lot of water to test.
The biggest challenge for Wheating is a race like the mile at PRE where it is packed with guys all at relatively the same fitness in one race. International championship qualifiers and finals will never be that deep so that makes it much better for Wheating.
For his level he has still raced relatively very little compared to most others, and yet with his body type he needs that experience the most. That will come if he stays healthy. I'd wager Andrew has a few more plateaus that he will break thru much like Rupp has over the years.
Wheating should be worried. Torrence, Lomong, Manzano, Centro, and even his training partner Brown are all looking way better than he is.
He should also feel guilty for letting down the fans and his sponsor. He's supposed to be the next great mid-distance runner and right now Rupp could take him down over a mile. The guy better put up some good performances soon or Nike should stop wasting money on him.

3:56 isn't that bad, especially considering the race probably went out quicker than he was ready to run at this point.
he needs to be around 3:52-53 shape at least to be in contention to make the team. He's got time and he'll be fine. He must be looking pretty good in workouts or his coach wouldn't have thrown him to the wolves today. It'll probably just take a few more weeks for his racing to come all the way around.
And he'll need to be in 3:46-47 shape to medal at the OG. I don't see it happening.
This is a MUCH better result than his last 1500/mile - a 3:45 1500m tying up the last 100m - and is worth about 3:38 for 1500. He should be fine. Tough field to run a 3:56 against though...
