Hello fellow masters,
It looks like a week for quick updates as we immerse ourselves in family and memorial activities. I don't think I have a wide enough window to run the 10 miles I need, but I should be able to get in at least 8.
I've struggling with exercise-induced asthma at my last two races (a 10k at tempo pace last Sunday and the 3.5 mile JP Morgan Chase Corporate Challenge Champs in Chicago on Thursday. The first mile or two have gone well, but I feel my respiratory system constricting, and then I eventually am overcome with dry heaves and in the worst caes, a choking cough. I still managed to get my highest finish at the JP Morgan race, but it's discouraging to have been slowed by breathing issues.
I think I've found a few things to try to reduce the risk of occurance. Using my inhaler before the race didn't seem to help much, but some people have had success with a longer warm-up and then a second pair of inhaler doses. (Jackie Joyner Kersey even went a step further and induced an asthma attack before the race). I also think it's related to Gastric Reflux, so I'll try a more restrictive the day before the race. Finally, there seems to be a correlation with high pollen counts, so I'll have to factor that into my race strategy.
Otherwise, my running is going well, and I fortunately will only have a few races longer than 10 minutes this summer due to my preference for track.
