My pr for the mile is 4:58 but I only run 2:23 for the 800m. Is the 800 really bad compared to my mile (I'm guessing it is)? So what can I do to improve it?

Bump
I'd say that is a slow 800 based on your mile. Do you do speed work? Two track days a week is all you should need. 100s, 200s, 300s. One to focus on speed and acceleration with full recovery. The next to be run at 800 or mile pace with short active recoveries. It's really an individual thing so this is just an example of what I might do in your place. The upside is that it's likely that you have great aerobic strength and if your 800 gets faster your mile should too.
Fore 4:58 your 800 should be around 2:15, no worse than 2:17-18. The biggest mistake people make is going too hard the first 200. Run lots of strides and 200s, hill repeats, check for form issues, especially for upper body.

Go to the coaches page.
Look don't worry those are some real good times. By the time you get to highschool, and later on when you are a senior you'll run much faster! D1 colleges will be calling. I just hope if you haven't hit puberty yet that larger breasts and hips don't ruin your promising career!
The same way you get to Carnegie Hall.
Practice, practice, practice!

There is no comparison that works well for all runners. We had a guy on my high school team who ran 2:01 for the 800 but he couldn't break 5:00 in the 1600. He was one of those 400 runners who moved up to run the 800. Maybe you are just better at the longer distances.
Read as much as you can from these threads http://www.letsrun.com/forum/flat_read.php?thread=308471, try stuff out, experiment, don't take anything as gospel, just see what works for you, instead of blindly throwing your body into a training program learn to listen to it and adjust accordingly
What can you run for the 400m?

Probably low 60's.
How can I improve my speed?

Check out his thread if you want to improve your 800m time.
http://www.letsrun.com/forum/flat_read.php?thread=4458457Just keep on training and let the times come to you.
And you shouldn't worry about your 800 being slow. Mine was much worse.
As a FR I ran 2:24 and 5:10
As a SO I ran 2:14 and 4:40
Near the end of my JR year I was at 2:10 and 4:33, then I had a huge breakthrough in the 800 to 2:04 (followed shortly by 4:31 in the 1600). Probably I was capable of it before but didn't know how to race the 800. I also saw dramatic improvement in 400m speed at the same time. You probably just need to do the right kind of speedwork, and I think doing hill intervals helped me (we did about 8 x 45 seconds uphill with slow jog down recovery, approximate effort level would be like what you would do for repeat 400s with 2-3 minutes rest...I could do 65s at that time).
My SR year I had to run the 800 all the time because I was the top returner. I won all my dual meets...not bad for a long distance runner who started off so poorly in the 800m. I ended up with 2:02 and 4:23 for PRs in HS. This was in the late 80s when we did no real endurance training. If you do the right stuff your time can drop a lot, and fast.
