Does seem like ALOT of racing in the next couple months with everything leading up to NCAA's, and the Canadian Olympic Trials. Best of luck to him though, hopefully he remains injury free
Levins can do it. I'm excited to see how he does.
What is the deal w/ the Canadian Trials? I thought he was one of the few to meet the Canadian standards.
That's still like 5% of his weekly mileage, so it works out.
The guy runs 150 miles a week. Nothing is excessive.

Correct, so now he just has to place top-3 at his National Championships, as most people do.
Regionals does seem kind of odd. Its my understanding that a lot college t&f fans question why the meet even exists. It seems the best answer is for collegians to attain qualifying times. But Levins obviously doesn't need that.
But otherwise it makes sense. Afterall, he is on scholarship running for a track TEAM representing a school that wants to win as many points as possible.
Regionals are a very solid qualifying process, even if scorned by the elite. A runner of Levins' caliber should cruise through them no problem -- won't affect his training a bit.

So if he doesn't make top 3 he doesn't qualify, even if there are not 3 athletes with the standard?
That's correct. To put things in perspective, the 4th fastest Canadian time at 10,000m in the last 12 months is 28:12, Dylan Wykes. Wykes is probably in better shape this year, but... So it's not a complete no brainer.
For the poster above, Levins could win any of the 800, 1500, 5,000 and 10,000 at conference. He does not have to run the 5,000 and 10,000 to score points in 2 events.
On the other hand, he may just do the 5,000 and 10,000 as tempo runs (in trainers), so it might actually be easier on him.

He will only need to run the 5000m at the CDN trials (not sure if they will run the 10k at the trials anyways) and will be quite easy for him to place in the top 3. Athletics Canada will just enter him in the 10k as he will be on the team anyways, did the same thing with Kevin Sullivan when he ran the 5k after the 1500m without running the 5k at trials (think it was the World Chps) because he had the standard.

I thought there was no 10,000 at Canadian trials, but it looks like there is. Here's the meet website:
http://www.2012trials.caThe 5,000m at Canadian Chps may not be cakewalk also. The 4th and 5th Canadians ran 13:43 (Wykes and Martinson) in the last 12 months. Until 3 weeks ago, Levins was pretty much considered on par with the 4th and 5th Canadians (his PR was "only" 13:38). I believe that the other 2 in the top 3 (Ahmed and Bairu) had never lost to Levins on the track until last week.
I am sure that he will be top 3, but he will not be jogging.
Conference will be a complete jog. Regionals will be an effort. NCAA will be all out (and more...). Canadian Chps will be a very good effort (if everybody shows up).
No matter how you look at it, that's a lot of laps on the track.
...also Gillis and Watson, who are both in good marathon shape ran 13:40 a couple of years back... However, we haven't seen anything good on the track from them since. Watson is not qualified for the Olympics, but is obviously in good shape. The 10,000?
As I said, the Canadian Chps may not be a jog in the park.
conference will be easy wins for him, it'll be like a tempo workout - a short tempo workout
regionals he will juts run to qualify - wont' have to exert as much as the guy who finishes 24th.
NCAAs will be a real deal, but will probably be a tactical race although I'd like to see Derrick try to break him and have a race for the NCAA record. And the 5k will actually be tough with Derrick, Lalang, possibly some dark horses.
Canadian champs will probably be another pair of easy victories.
Correct with if I'm wrong, but wasn't it recently announced that Dylan Wykes had qualified for the London Olympics and would represent CANADA in the marathon?? Seems unlikely he would even compete at the Canadian Championships/Trials let alone potentially take a spot on the team from Levins...
Yes, Wykes, Gillis and Coolsaet are qualified in the marathon. However, they could still run the track trials.
A bunch of guys may not be there, but on the other hand, they could.
It is unlikely that more than 3 Canadians will run sub 27:45 this year. Two have this year and I can only see Bairu as the third to potentially achieve it. So as another poster said, Levins could arrange it with AC not to run the 10,000m and then run at the Olympics based on the fact that he's already there for the 5,000m and has the A+ for the 10,000m.
However, it seems like Levins wants to run all these races. Once in them, he will probably want to win (otherwise why show up). Ahmed is no slouch... Neither is Bairu...
If he decides to jog it, others with Olympic dreams will also be there to push...
Tremendous talent. Hope to see Cam at Mammoth Track Club soon.
I think that meet is referred to as "Canadians"
