We wear banana hammocks and powder blue nipple tassels... before we hit the showers anyway.
I chide them for wearing capris.
It's HS, so dont be shocked with HS attitudes. This is as much running as most of them will ever do. If they go on to college the XC teams and track teams will wear running shorts, but I guarantee the guys jogging around campus will sport the basketball shorts with half tights underneath.
There is a happy medium available between the sissy looking short shorts of the 70s to mid-80s and the ridiculous near-pants that a lot of kids call shorts. Let me add, I know people that don't like to wear shorts when they aren't exercising and I get that, but I don't get the point of long baggy shorts for exercise that are so close to pants they may as well be. What next? Are Mr. Vitamin pants/Skids going to make a comeback?

They make 7" inseam proper running shorts for people who don't want their junk exposed.

If we see a runner on my college team wearing long shorts, we ask them, "Are you trying out for the basketball team?"
We even do this for the longer running shorts. You wear split shorts round here.
You sound like a bunch of douches.

If I recall correctly, the Steve Slattery character in "Running with the Buffalos" wore basketball shorts before he got his mind right out in Boulder.
Slattery came for an official visit when I was in school and I was surprised that he wore basketball shorts and boxers on the runs. Keep in mind he was legit, too.
We all wore team issued shorts. Nike team shorts in various team colors. Most of us wore regular t-shirts unless it was really hot. Not sure why but we rarely wore tech shirts even though we had plenty of them.
