So here is how our season looks...
1 month of base running - Mileage & strides.
1 month of conditioning - Tempos, fartleks, start some intervals.
2 months of racing every Wednesday and Saturday.
1 month of "Championship meets"
The meets are required by league rule. Head coach wants to win dual meets so they need to run hard for points.
So... how exactly do you "race into shape." I knew a few guys who raced in Europe that said they would do 2 meets a week and besides that it was easy running and strides. But these are HS kids without a huge base. Do we still do a workout on Monday? That leaves Tuesday as a pre-race, Thursday / Friday as a recovery day and not much time to do anything else.
So should we just work hard the first two months, gain as much fitness as we can and then just race the last 2-3 months?
Anyone have any experience with this? I don't want to burn them out but also want to do it right... help me out!
