Why the love? How many times has he been MVP? What happened to the Colts when he couldn't play a year? Answer: a very good perennial playoff team and contender earns the number one pick in the draft.
Really, though, most teams want him because they are jonesin' for that killer Drew Brees-Boba Fett combo.

It is exactly that simple. And that is the reason why teams want him. Case closed
Its because Manning is the GOAT (Greatest Of All Time). Brady is close, however he has consistently had a better team around him.
With the financial protection Manning is willing to sign, this is a high reward, low risk signing. The 49ers (and I will put money on him going there) will be the best team in the NFL and Vegas favorite to win.
I know we're talking "real" football here but what about fake football? I don't think I'd even roll the dice with him as a starter on my fantasy team. Yes, I know there's a difference between REAL wins and fantasy points but kind of ironic: I dont have to spend ANY money on him and won't risk it while real owners may spend $90m on him. (or maybe I'm just a risk-averse tightwad).

Oh please. It takes 22 players to fill all the starting spots on a football team...
True and to have a bye week comes play-off time or to have home field advantage is a sign that you were able to play well during the regular season and therefore cannot blame the supporting cast. Especially if Peyton is supposed to make everyone around him better. It sure didn't show when it really mattered.
Post-season, I'm even more impressed with his brother Eli.
I can see Peyton Manning in the top 10 of all time, but there are at least 5 legendary QBs better than him that can be considered the GOAT. I don't think Peyton is legendary.
All this to say , Payton is a great QB, belongs to the Hall of Fame for sure but definitely not the GOAT.
I think he has 2 years to make a difference ( super ball final)with a new team. After that he'll be lucky to be healthy enough to play or just too old.
49ers his best chance to win now. Titans his best fit long-term. Who knows maybe even coaching position once his career is over with.
Peace
I think people are enamored with statistics and miss the bigger picture, lack of results in the most important games.
Perhaps the distinction is that Manning is a great passer -- maybe one of the best ever -- but a quarterback is more than a passer, or at least the legendary ones are. They're leaders.
I won't miss seeing the pained looks on Manning's face and arm gestures he likes to make after an incompletion. Clearly it's not his fault. Always the receiver.
I also won't miss the snide inferences that the defense is the problem when you lose a close playoff game 19-16. Ad nauseum.
Wherever he lands, I agree that he needs to take whatever team that is deep into the playoffs.
As a Niners fan, I'm not happy about this. Just as Smith was starting to come into his own, they are going to thow money away on an aging, injured, formerly great player. If the Niners sign Manning, they will have zero wiggle room under the salary cap and it will be difficult to sign their first round draft pick. Smith will go elsewhere and then when Manning is ultimately hurt again (or retires after a year or two), they will have nobody to go to for back up.
Picking up Moss for cheap was a great move. WR was a glaring area of weakness for them last year. Moss won't displace anyone good, so his signing can only be a plus. Give Harbaugh and Smith an entire off season to integrate Moss with Crabtree and a healthy Joshua Morgan and they have a capable, but not exceptional, receiving corps. That would be more than enough for them to generate the offense needed to win the big one. After all, this was a team that was two muffed punts away from the superbowl last year even with their wide receivers totalling only one catch in the NFC championship.
Here is how simple it is:
He is a franchise qb and he is a free agent. That NEVER happens in the nfl with teams being able to use the franchise tag. Of qbs in the nfl right now, not counting this upcoming draft, you only have 5-6 teams with proven qbs of manning's caliber. So that leaves 80% of the nfl salivating to make an upgrade who couldn't be any worse than what they have, and in many cases manning would be extremely better. Sure he may only have 2-3 years left but the nfl is a win now league. There are no more rebuilding years or getting younger through the draft and waiting a few years. You win now or you don't.
In the last decade there has only been 1 super bowl champion with an average qb, Tampa Bay in sb37 with Brad Johnson. Every other winner since that time has had a potential HOFer at the helm:
NE - Brady
Pitt - Roethlisberger
Indy - Manning
NY - Manning
NO - Brees
GB - Rodgers

In my opinion, what has made Peyton great is not his athletic ability or even his arm strength. You can find plenty of guys who have better athletic ability and comparable-better arm strength. What has made Peyton great is his mind, his understanding if the game. He is the coach on the field. He sees just about everything before it happens. Doesn't mean he can always do something about it, but still...his understanding if the game is probably unparalleled in the game today, except for Tom Brady. Picking up Peyton on a short contract would allow him to mentor Tebow or Alex Smith and turn them into much better QBs - much smarter decision makers, much better game managers. I honestly think that's Peyton's biggest value right now.
This. Manning is the most cerebral qb to have played the game. Much of what makes him so great is the way he can outsmart the defenses. He is the coach on the field. And fwiw, Andrew Luck looks to be the same kind of qb that Manning was. At Stanford, he was allowed to call plays on the field which is rare in college ball.
I honestly think the 49ers can benefit from having Manning and I hope he goes there. At the very least he can get fans in the seats and teach alex smith some insider tips. Plus I think he has a few more seasons in him!

Smith's a free agent. I can't imagine him re-signing with the 49ers if they sign Manning. He's more likely to leave.
Then, in 2-3 years, instead of having a guy in his prime, the 49ers will have a 40 year old qb and no one up and coming.
