I have a few kids who are freshman who have been running for me for 6-12 months and they have not improved very much in that time. Most of them are 13 minute 2 mile guys even after steady 30 mpw or so without significant breaks. They don't have much leg speed, around 66-67 at top form so I've come to a dilemma in training them. They are already surpassed by several of their classmates so they will probably never sniff varsity, even if they can run low 10s by their senior year. I would throw the mileage on them and hope to turn them into studs but being so young I don't want to crush their motivation to train and alienate them from the rest of their classmates who are already in the 11s for 2 miles. Another issue is I know I will have some younger guys coming in soon who will pass them up and I may lose them when they realize they won't be a factor for the varsity squad. Should I throw volume at them anyway and hope for the best or should I take a different path and train their speed up and hope that balances out their disparity of talent by the summer?
