Need a little advice. My son is a HS soph with fairly modest XC/track times -- he got down around 16:15 (all-conference for JV) for 3 miles in the fall and mostly runs the 800 in the spring and should be under 2:10 by the end of the season.
His summer training will be big for him as his XC team returns its top-5 from a state-ranked team from last year. Meaning there are probably going to be three or four guys going for those last two spots.
He usually only runs with the team in practice, although he has started to run on his own a little bit, which I'm happy to see. Since he is 16 I don't get a lot of training data out of him other than they have a pretty typical split between base (they go about 40 minutes), tempo (same) and track workouts. I do trust his coach and the guy has produced good runners, he has sent runners/teams to state in both XC and track for each of the last 20 years.
So I am finally to my question...when summer comes (or even starting now) what should he be doing in terms of a "long" run? His XC workouts will be pretty much basework between May and August but between being a longtime reader of this site and my unspectacular career as a hobby-jogger (by LRC standards) I am a big believer in stretching it out time/distance-wise one day a week and I'm pretty sure some of his varsity teammates do that too. I think during the summer he should be going at least an hour one day a week, which would push him up to 7-8 miles if he went super easy.
Thoughts? I'm definitely not one of those overbearing parents, I just know what his goals are and want to see if I can help him can take the next step. His team has a good chance to get to state and do well next year and I know he wants to be a part of it. Of course I'd talk to his coach about anything I would want to add to his training but I figure some well-heeded advice from here will help me when I talk to him about it.
