I'll say what most of you are thinking. We don't want him to break the record because he is a fresh Kenyan Import. Who knows how old he really is.

You are correct. I would feel differently if he were an American citizen. Additionally, if it could ACTUALLY be verified (with an ORIGINAL) birth certificate that he was 18 or under, and not 22-23 (what I believe he is), then I wouldn't mind as much.

Him breaking the record is bad for the sport. When my non-running friends ever ask me anything about running (who won races, record holers, etc.), telling them "someone from Kenya" doesn't grab their interest one bit. People will say this is racist, but what is best for the sport (in America) is people winning and excelling who are born there, and who speak good English.

I make exceptions for Abdi and Meb (whom I like a lot) because they have lived in America for so long and speak good English.

No doubt. Maybe not today, but he'll do it in high school. He'll break all the distance records of note except maybe Webb's outdoor. Better question is how many old guys will implode when he does break the record even though their kids, grandkids and athletes all love Cheserek. He's like the pied piper at track meets. Only bitter old fogeys take issue with him.

I suppose you are racist and took "born there" to mean "only white." I suppose you don't believe that blacks born in America can excel in distance running? But for your information, there are many, many black people born in America (as in...any of them) who I would love to take the 2-mile record away from the foreigner Lukas Verzbicas.

I've openly said that I would love for any american, black or white, to have our AMERICAN high school records, so long as they are born here and/or speak good english after having lived here for a while. Please tell me how I am racist in saying that I wish any black kid would take lukas verzbicas' 2 mile record. As for webb's 3:53, I remain indifferent because the record is already held by an american.

I think he will run sub 3:59. Having seen this kid run numerous times in New Jersey, I just think that he on another level. Unlike Verzbicas, who last year dominated because of the superior aerobic endurance he gained from triathlon training, Cheserek is undertrained. He has a tremendous amount of basic speed, splitting a 52.x for his first 400 at penn relays last year. No one knows what this kid will ultimately be capable of and an early 8:43 where he lapped everyone shows that he is in shape and ready to run fast.

Consider the fact that at the elite level, Kenyans are clearly faster than natural born Americans.

It stands to reason then that young Kenyans will be faster than young natural born Americans.

cheserek can run MUCH faster than 52.x. I'm sure he could run sub 50.

I'm pretty sure Cheserek has gone out in 52 in an 800.

Anyway, this is the perfect field for him. I can see him running a blazing time here, maybe 3:58?

Yeah. I should have stated that. Last year, he went out in a 52 on a 1600 anchor leg at Penn. He held on to run somewhere around 4:06 - 4:08. I also think sub 1:48 800 will happen by the spring. Kids an animal.
