A 6k?

Pretty slow if it's a 6K:)

It seems like 18:20 for 6k would be about 4:56/mile pace, which the results seem to indicate, but I'm too lazy to do the math.

Yep, it calculates out to 3.72 miles or 6K. Not exactly the fastest times.

that race was long, they need to remeasure the course.

you'd think they'd maybe put the distance? stanford's first girl was 23:30, shitty time for 6k, and she's better than that. i'd guess 6.2 to 6.4k

No offense, but you can KMA. I know it's cross. I was replying to people calculating mile pace, commenting on slow times, etc. By looking at times, you know it's long. In xc place is all that matters.

BTW, did they use the same course as the Regional women's 6k?

Yes, same exact course as Regional women. I ran, don't think it was long, just tough (big hill on backside). Plus, nothing was at stake. I just did it as a tempo run and didn't kick. No one I talked to tapered for it. It was just a workout.

So if you showed up at the starting line and saw the finish line 57.3 meters away, you wouldn't care, right? Or if they announced today's race is 23.7k, you wouldn't care, right?

Right. Of course, your hyperbole-laden examples are no more a part of reality than running THROUGH a hill rather than over or around it is. Let's try to stay in the realm of realistic experience rather than exploring the nontypical or even nonexistant fantasy, m'kay? Do you not see that there will be a significant difference in pace/times between a course that is EXACTLY 6K and is basically flat and another course that is also EXACTLY 6K, but has a hill or two thrown in? Or even a course that is EXACTLY 6K but is slightly rolling? If they say it's 8K, but is actually 8.18K or 7.85K, what's it really matter? Will you factor that "inaccuracy" into your race plan, even if you know that without fail the length will fall within a very narrow range? Or will you still try to beat as many people as possible, regardless of how long or short the course might be? The only people who carp about inaccurate course lengths in cross (where times have NO bearing - there aren't automatic and provisional qualifying times for post-season cross at ANY level, are there?) are the hopeless stat geeks.

Actually, we did go through the hill. There is an abandoned RR tunnel at the 51 mile mark in the Cascade Crest Class 100. The tunnel is over two miles of the dark and scary and dripping water. We did go through the hill rather than over or around it. Good memory, thanks.

Hopeless stat geek -- open-minded enough to accept that folks will still want to know the distance associated with a time so they can have some idea of what went on in terms of effort, difficulty, astrological phase, or flavor of jello eaten before the run.

Only someone as anal as you couldn't figure that he meant a solid hill, not something encountered in an adventure survival event for nutjob hippies. Folks who have a good idea of what cross is really about know that what really matters is winning, baby! Those who think they can glean anything significant from time and pace in any race that isn't held on a sea-level track are only fooling themselves.

Why was only half the Farm Team running? No Hauser, Asmeron, Graff, Savage, Gilmore, Lane, etc. I thought the 6k was a neat idea and a good way to level the playing field between the distance and the middle distance guys.

Maybe they are saving themselves for bigger things? Just curious why they wouldn't compete in their own backyard. If anyone has any insight let me know.
