Amateur, self trained runner competing against the best in the world. He is not worried about endorsements he runs for the sake of competition and the love of running.
We need more American distance runners that are like this.

I agree. I love that guy. Inspirational.
As of right now the only american runner that can beat his marathon pr of 2:08:37 from Tokyo is Ryan Hall. No disrespect to Meb or any other US marathoners.
"Kawauchi admitted that he was not in very good form for Fukuoka with February’s Tokyo Marathon, another Olympic qualifying race, his primary goal. For Kawauchi, Fukuoka was just a warm up race for a better performance in Tokyo."
Definately badass
What do you think the chances are that Yuki Kawauchi runs a faster time in Tokyo than the winner of the U.S men olympic trials.
high 207s or faster for Yuki; with the exception of Hall, no one will run faster than 211 high. I'm not so sure Hall will make the team. Boston, Chicago and the Trials race in less than 1 year. If I we're a betting man, I'd bet against Hall making the team.
Once again letsrun love for anyone who is not african and no love for the africans who whip his butt

I bet Hall does make the team, easily too.
Kawauchi is a boss not for his 2:09, but for how he broke the other two Japanese at the end of that race. Anyone watching the livestream see his death surges after 30K? Now that, is running. He shattered those men.

I might take stock in this argument if Hall wasn't so much faster than any other American; he's at least five minutes faster than anyone else he's gonna be racing against at the OT
Shows if you put your mind to it, you can do anything.
There's been some love for South African runner Bruce Fordyce on here before.

The body is the servant of the mind. It obeys the operations of the mind, whether they be deliberately chosen or automatically expressed-JAllen

Well, if that's how you feel then how do you account for the fact that Kawauchi has run 5 marathons in the last year not including a 50k race in May?
Dec. '10: 2:17, Fukuoka
Feb. '11: 2:08, Tokyo
Sept. '11: 2:16, WC
Oct. '11: 2:14, Osaka
Dec. '11: 2:09, Fukuoka
He's also running the Hofu Marathon on Dec. 18, then Tokyo in February.

Being fair, he didn't say it was impossible for ANY runner to make the team having run 3 marathons in a year, just that he didn't think that Hall would. He may be making a comment on a frailty of Hall's that doesn't apply to Kawauchi.
Hall and Kawauchi have different styles. When Hall gets in a groove he goes on a steady auto-pace; a smooth run flow.
Kawauchi has no auto-pace. He runs at whatever pace he feels he can go, and then goes faster than that; an until-I-drop-dead-pace.
If Hall and Kawauchi make it to the Olympic marathon this is what I would like to see:
Hall hits his zone and feels great at 22-23 miles running 2:05 pace.
Kawauchi runs 2:06 pace at 22-23 miles and then goes for his death run.
Hall becomes Kawauchi's target.
It doesn't matter who wins or what place they finish. The battle to the finish is what I want to see.

Fair enough in this instance, but when people usually level this type of criticism against Hall it's in a more blanket, "X marathons in Y period of time are too many" sense that is simply not true.
Looking forward to seeing Yuki try to drop some of those surges against Haile in February, at any rate.

I'd bet that if we find an African running 2:10 or better while working a 40ish hour week at a real job we'll see some appreciation here. There's not much in the line of admiration threads for any other Japanese runners, i.e., those who have the supported system going for them, here.

It's a good thing you're not a betting man. Being mentally retarded and betting seems like a recipe for disaster.
