My coach always has us take the day off from running, the day before a race. Do you think its a good or bad idea and why?

I like to do an easy run and strides, otherwise I'll feel stiff the day of the race. Also, gotta get in those miles.
For a half or full marathon I do.
My pattern has always been to take the day off 2 days prior to the race. The day before the race is an easy 3-5 miles with some pick ups.
i like to go light the day before , but early season meets are meaningless in the grand scheme of things, so i like to train through.
We do about 5 miles split into a warmup, some slow indian runs, some stride outs, a .5 run alone, and a cooldown. Most of it is just to mentally get ready to race. We know that there are no physical benefits to what is going on, but it feels good and gets us in the racing mood.

I am a big supporter of doing some nice repeat 1600s the day before a race. That is what we do at my D1 college and we make nationals every year so it must work.
I like to do 20x400 in 51 with a 15 second jog the day before ... gets the blood flow going.
I just keep my normal mileage but skip whacking off that night.

this
..also we do our normal 1 mile warm up and drills, then a very easy 30 minute run, basically a shuffle of the feet, followed by 4x100 strides on the track, then a good stretching session. Normal mileage two days before a race.
