Hi everyone...I apologize if this post is a bit long but would like to ask for your advice please...
Background: I am 5'6", 120 lbs male. I just put an end to a professional cycling career and am trying to start running (which I love!). I have very flat feet (left arch is more collapsed than right; 7 mm longer left leg; twisted pelvis with right side tilted forward), and I do overpronate when walking and running (at toe-off my whole foot tends to evert, moreso on the left). In the past, when I would occasionally run, I developed plantar fascitis from heel striking.
Currently, I started running about a month ago and took care to midfoot/forefoot strike. I was really happy that I did not develop any heel pain or plantar fascitis but within a week or two, I developed:
right achilles tendonitis
possible stress fracture to right calcaneus (x-ray, but not confirmed by MRI)
This all occured while running in a neutral shoe (Brooks Launch). My greatest complaint though was tendonitis on top of my right foot which seemed to hurt a lot at the start of the run and then subside as I kept running.
After going to the shoe store to try some other shoes, I tried some stability shoes and some orthotics (molded to my foot, brand is Foot Balance). This then started what is now pain mostly in left leg...
Shin splint on left head of lateral proximal fibula (where the bony protusion is on outside of left leg) and pain when flexing leg at the hip
I can't run anymore because my left leg cannot handle the impact and buckles under any load.
At this point, I am resigned to using the elliptical and the stairmaster and am really hoping I can start running again soon (and will take it slow!). In the meantime, I'd like to ask about what shoes and orthotics combination I should be using... I am a big believer in natural running and midfoot/forefoot striking and not a huge fan of orthotics and support. I did not like the jabbing of the arch support when I tried stability shoes/orthotics. However, first and foremost I would like to run pain-free... I have been trying to walk barefoot as much as possible but that seems to irritate my left fibula shin splint. My right calcaneus (possible stress fracture) also seems to ache a lot even when I am not striking the ground with my heel.
Questions...
1. Should I really walk around all the time in the boot for my right calcaneus stress fracture? The ache is minor and never bothersome when walking/sitting.
2. What shoes should I be walking around in? I have: neutral Brooks Launch, stability Brooks Ravenna 2.
3. Should I use my orthotics with these shoes when I walk? They are semi-rigid Foot Balance ones molded to my foot.
4. When I start running again, what shoe/orthotic combination should I use?
Ideally, I would like to run in neutral shoes without orthotics and strengthen my arches, feet, and the stabilizing muscles. I am working on strengthening my hips and those muscles while I am injured and cross-training. Any advice though?
Any encouragement or thoughts on healing time would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you.
