He ran something like 44.4-6 on the anchor. His last 100 was totally sick. He was stuck on the rail with the South African boxing him in so he slowed, got out to lane two and then totally destroyed the last 100.
Let's give him the props he deserves. Without him the US would have a bronze medal.

Yeah, the first 3 legs didn't do anything special. Merritt simply outclassed the other anchors in the last 100 to move from 3rd to 1st. Hope he gets cleared for London. Once he gets back in top form, he will be tough to beat.

I don't understand our relay selection here. We neglected to choose our 400m specialists who ran like bosses in the heats in order to put two over-the-hill, 400m hurdle burnouts who ran three races prior to this relay and bombed in the finals. In heats we ran almost two seconds faster with merrit running over 46 for his final leg! Did we risk gold to soothe these guys egos or something? I don't get it.
Agreed, most impressive final 100m in a championship 4x400 I've ever seen. What a boss!
Bershawn, nice job running with baton in your left hand in the world championship final. And terrible takeoff and not running in your portion of the lane when receiving the stick.
I deeply hope that Lee Evans, Larry James, Vince Matthews, Michael Johnson, and the Jet did not witness the first three legs. Good God, was that terrible.
Please, next time put Mike Berry in the final instead of Bershawn Jackson.

Merritt was obviously throttling back on the backstretch, though. Just going with the race, waiting for an opening--and then moving out when no opening appeared. If he'd let himself go wide on the backstraight, he could have had 6m on the others with 200m to go.
Nice race by the South Africans--and smart to leave OP out of the final. Nobody's gonna say their silvers are tarnished.
Now, Semenya's gold--that might have a bit of tarnish on it. (But does gold even tarnish?)

I am now a Merritt fan. I used to root for Wariner, but now Merritt is my favorite. He toiled all alone during his suspension and it probably took a lot of focus to maintain his shape all that time. Glad to see him chase down everyone on the back stretch... that had to feel great. Look for him to be under 44 again next year.
The qualifying team would've run faster, like someone else pointed out the hurdlers looked off the whole meet (save for Bershawn in the hurldes semis). Bershawn is lucky Taylor closed decently well over the last 100, but Merritt had the race well under control and could've run faster if needed. He runs up on SA and Jamaica quickly and is very content and controlled on the back stretch. He knew he would blow by them and was hoping for an inside pass but went wide when that didn't materialize. Though closer than in years past and closer than it should've been, the streak continues!
Surprised blade runner didn't run the relay. I can't imagine all 4 on that SA relay team were better than him. Could have been the difference for gold.
