How did Jim Farmer due as a high school/college runner(UNC)? I know he gave Porter a scare at Nat. XC '88 but other than that know nothing about the guy.

Farmer went to my high school, Broughton High School in Raleigh, North Carolina. He has the school record of 4:11 in the mile. He went on to UNC and did really well. I do know that he got 5/6th in the Olympic Time trials at one point, but i don't know what year. Hope that helps.
I remember that race. Porter shrugged off the challenge verbally after the race but Farmer was closing on him and only needed a little more room to get Porter. It's not like Porter was known for his kick. It was a close race but Porter prevailed. Only to get nailed the next year by Todd Williams.
I think Porter won at least one more after the Farmer race before losing to Kempainen at Van Cortlandt in 1990. The loss to Williams at Franklin Park came the next year, followed by a 3rd behind Kennedy and Williams in 1992 (what a finish that was -- BK overtaking Porter in the last 100 meters or so and tagging Williams at the line). Man, what a great race XC nationals used to be. The way they do it now just isn't the same.
That's right. It was '88 in Van Cortlandt when Farmer almost nailed Porter. In the women's race it was Jennings and then a slew of her AW teammates to take the team title. A nike sweep.
